Aust.

More overseas reinforcements have arrived to boost the firefighting effort in Victoria's north-east and Gippsland as the state heats up.

A second group of 66 New Zealand firefighters began arriving today and will be deployed tomorrow, while 52 firefighters from the Canadian province of British Columbia will land on on Sunday.

The Canadians have expertise in incident management and specialist forest fire fighting skills, while a small group will also work with specialist helicopter operations.

There was quite a bit of coverage of the group heading out from B.C. on the CBC last week.

I'm glad that somebody had resources that would be useful/helpful.

I wonder what bbq'd Canadian tastes like.

We need more fire management people with actual fire experience as well as on ground suppression. DSE have advertised for another 200 project firefighters (on the ground fire supression)

It will be interesting to see how conifer experience stacks up to exploding eucalypts.

The kiwi contingent that was fried said they had never experienced anything like it.

Thanks also to the Nzers who have thrown their hats in the ring.

Deb, the fire we have locally is largely "controlled" at this stage. Once the moisture dries out again the embers from thousands of slow burning "candles" (burning trees that are still standing) will become a problem. there are portions of this fire still uncontrolled such as LICOLA, DONDONGADALE and COOPERS CREEK
New fires are going at orbost.
Its important to remeber that most of these firs wont threaten private property so you wont read about it in the newspaper however the will damage the states timber industry costing millions and flowon effects.

Additionally any new lightning strikes need to be properly managed.

Our management people are stretched dealing with what we have already.

Rainfall total for 2006 was 325mm (average 750mm) which is the lowest ever recorded so you can see how desperate we are.
