When trying to send a private message I get the message below. How long is a period of good standing? Thanks!
You have not met the PM privilege requirements for sending out PMs. Access to PMs is given to users after a period of good standing during which they have been active members of the community.
The magic number seems to be 500 posts.
Hi, Victor. Always look at the announcements.
This might help:

I can see 500posts being a good round number, but what about him?
he has been around for a while. We ( think ) he wont spam anyone with PM ..
and if he does, well
we will just shoot him.
Thanks for the information!
500 is not a magic number, and this has been explained near uncountable times by the administration here.

Worked for me and a bunch of others, but I'm sure the hamsters like to keep people guessing.
No, there is an algorithm.
I'm not in the mood to go hunt up a link for the explanations.
I never had asked about PM privileges, and didn't ask if there
was a restriction. It just worked!
Always worked for me, too.
It's the "cool kid" restriction. If you're cool, you can send PM's. If you're an asswipe, no PM'S FOR YOU!
The mods are like the soup nazis. PM nazis.

Yeah, as I understand it, its sorta like a moving target - the idea being, I think, to make it harder for would-be abusers to game the system.
