Why are manhole covers round?
So that they can't fall in if tipped. Also, it's so that they can cover the hole without having to be placed in any special manner.
Any other shape will either not cover the hole every time (triangles, for example) or will fall in if shifted (a rectangle).
jespah,
Bingo! Thanks for your response.
I believe I read somewhere that when manhole covers were first developed they were square, rectangular, etc. They were soon changed for the reason you gave.
Yer welcome! Just be careful about what's under the manhole covers - alligators in the sewers and all that. :-D
Not to point out the obvious or anything, but manhole covers are round...because manholes are round.
CtrlSS..hehe!
..I lived in a Russian town 'bout 7 years back where manholes were abundant, but manhole covers were quite the unusual apparatus. Seems they were all stolen to sell for scrap iron long ago. 'Twas a fairly freaky place to walk or drive at night, I tells ya!
Riddle ##
Let's see if we can do this. I have a riddle which is realy tough, unless you've heard it before. If you do know it immediately, give those who are hearing for the first time, a chance to try, guess, or figure out.
Of course this depends on complete trust.
Riddle: Why are manhole covers round?
Why repeat a question in the same thread?
markr, You're right. It was a pretty dumb idea to
begin with.
2 reasons...
1. For it not to fall in
2. Moving it is easier since ull just have to roll it.
