On a 5x5 chessboard, queens kan move horizontally, vertically and diagonally in any direction as far as they like. Place three queens and five pawns on the board such that all of the pawns are safe and cannot be taken by the queens.

I refuse to do this as doing so may endanger some of my prime pieces. That would be unconscionable!

You theatrical folk make me laugh, are you sure your prime piece was not taken by a queen long ago?

Which on reflection is only what Mark has already found, it also works inverted
In that case this situation would be impossible. If my opponent even had one queen and I had none I would have resigned the game. I would not allow myself to be stuck with three pawns and no prime pieces. It would be undignified.

It's like in baseball when a team is up 15-0 and they still try to bunt or steal a base, as if they needed to resort to such tactics because their lead isn't cushy enough. That's just bad sportsmanship, buddy.
If my opponent had three Queens and I had none I would have resigned the game long ago. Actually, most people would resign after having lost their Queen.
