I had a notificatin that a new private message had arrived but when I click into my mailbox there is no new message.
Any ideas?

The most likely possibility is that someone sent you a PM, then changed his/her mind and deleted it from his/her Outbox before you had a chance to read it.
Oh! Hmmm. I didn't know you could do that.

In addition to deleting PMs which have not yet been read, you can edit or just re-read them as well.
