As U.S. Fans Out in Iraq, Violence and Death on Rise

By PATRICK E. TYLER

AL HIR, Iraq, June 13 — American troops fanning out to reinforce allied control of Iraq came under attack again today in at least three separate places north of Baghdad. Retaliating, they killed at least seven people, military officials said.
The Americans who came under attack said that they had killed two of their assailants. Then, in a confusing encounter that produced contradictory versions of events, at least five more Iraqis were killed. Those Iraqis were characterized by local people as innocent bystanders, but the American military said they were attackers.

The action in Iraq appears to be taking on the character of the Israeli/Palestinian conflict. Is the US now facing an extended period of guerrilla warfare with the local population siding with the guerrillas?

I am afraid it is a quagmire. Hopefully we will manage not to get swallowed up by the quicksand.

It is a terrifying thought indeed, given how "over-committed" our armed forces currently are, that this administration would contemplate widening the nightmare. I have so little confidence in either their decency or their competence not to entertain the horror that they will make such a move.

(Good article, ain't it . . . )

Thing is it is not going to stop for many years AND there is still Afghanistan in a mess with the war lords controlling their areas & not supporting the so called Govt in Kabul so in reality here are two countries USA has to clean up.
Not to be a cocky Cdn, but it looks as the USA has accidently become an Empire like the UK, France, Germany, Spain & some others WERE.

Here's an example of the freedom we are bringing to Iraq. No matter what one may say about Saddam he kept the lid on the Shiites. A bloody and violent lid but a lid nonetheless.
