Children aghast as pelican swallows pigeon whole
Last updated at 18:54pm on 24th October 2006
Families strolling through a London park were left shocked when a pelican picked up and swallowed an unsuspecting pigeon.
The Eastern White pelican struggled with the desperately frantic pigeon in its beak for more than 20 minutes before swallowing it whole.
The moment was caught on camera by photographer Cathal McNaughton, who was taking pictures of the wildlife in St James's Park.
The pigeon was still alive when it reached the pelican's stomach, he said.
Gold star for the pelican. I hate pigeons.
Never have liked pigeons. They're "rats with wings".
Pelicans, on the other hand, are one of my favorite birds. More so now.
I saw a pelican for the first time the other day. It was so rad.
Do... not... mess... with... pelicans.
They're actually very emotional and anxious birds....I knew the guy who trained them for a very famous Australian film made in the seventies, called "Storm Boy".
The idea of animals being swallowed alive has haunted me forever.....it happens to lots of them, I know........I only hope they suffocate really fast......
Pelicans often fly over me as I walk to work, through the CBD.
A number of hardy ones hang out in the river in the midddle of the city.
It IS odd having a pair flap lazily past a couple of feet over your head, amidst the roar of rush hour traffic, though.
They are like the 747s of the bird world.
I love watching them glide over the ocean looking so graceful and then fall out of the air-- like they suddenly forgot how to fly-- and splash into the waves after some no doubt toothsome looking fish.
Pelicans have been known to eat infants.
