it warms my heart to know. it was the first classical piece i had any relationship to. my 3rd grade teacher, Mrs. Tomikova, used to play it to us on a record player after school, and we'd talk about what we 'see' when we listen to it. She was the best.

Thanks for bringing up Peer Gynt.

I was in the process of reading it and LEFT MY BOOK at my mother's a year ago!

I just went online to read the synopsis.

Had no idea it was existential!

And about the music.

Here's a trailer, I think, from Peer Gynt:

And here, too. But maybe with different music?

Check out #1 Crisantemi -(Chrysanthemums). It is positively luscious.

Beautiful is an interesting adjective applied to music.

What immediately springs to mind is:

Forbidden Colors - Ryiuchi Sakamoto and David Sylvian (I own about four versions of this - still trying to track down an acoustic piano version I heard in a bar maybe 5 years ago)

The Great Gig In The Sky - Pink Floyd (I used to be able to play this on a piano)

Will ponder some more.

dupre, You don't happen to know George, do you? Razz I am quite certain his tastes in music are classical.

Yes, I know George.

Went to his big gubernatorial inaugrual and shook his hand at an event in San Marcos.

Met Karl Rove, too, once, regarding a Travis County Commissioner's race when I was a campaign manager.

Those were the days.

Cat Stevens really was something.

Whatever happened to him, anyway?

One of the comments on that video:

Quote:
What a pity such a great talent decided to stop making music and waste the rest of his life. Ho many more wonderful songs might he have otherwise written?

I was in love with him!! He's coming out with a new CD. (I kid you not. Wonder if he'll use Yusef Islam or Cat Stevens....?

<thinking of my favorite Cat song....>

I think Wild World, but I loved the whole Teaser and the Firecat album...

dupre, Frankly, I am impressed, Texas. I did several campaign songs for politicos, buddy.

So, for you:

Mary Hopkins. (sorry I can't do the uTube thing)

Once upon a time, there was a tavern
Where we used to raise a glass or two
Remember how we laughed away the hours,
Think of all the great things we would do

Those were the days, my friend
We thought they'd never end
We'd sing and dance forever and a day
We'd live the life we'd choose
We'd fight and never lose
For we were young and sure to have our way

Di di di di di di
Di di di di di di
Di di di di di di di di di di

Then, the busy years went rushing by us
We lost our starry notions on the way
If, by chance, I'd see you in the tavern,
We'd smile at one another and we'd say

Those were the days, my friend
We thought they'd never end
We'd sing and dance forever and a day
We'd live the life we'd choose
We'd fight and never lose
Those were the days, oh yes, those were the days

Di di di di di di
Di di di di di di
Di di di di di di di di di di

Just tonight, I stood before the tavern
Nothing seemed the way it used to be
In the glass, I saw a strange reflection
Was that lonely woman really me?

Those were the days, my friend
We thought they'd never end
We'd sing and dance forever and a day
We'd live the life we'd choose
We'd fight and never lose
Those were the days, oh yes, those were the days

Di di di di di di
Di di di di di di
Di di di di di di di di di di
Di di di di di di
Di di di di di di
Di di di di di di di di di di

Through the door, there came familiar laughter
I saw your face and heard you call my name
Oh, my friend, we're older but no wiser
For in our hearts, the dreams are still the same

Those were the days, my friend
We thought they'd never end
We'd sing and dance forever and a day
We'd live the life we'd choose
We'd fight and never lose
Those were the days, oh yes, those were the days

Di di di di di di
Di di di di di di
Di di di di di di di di di di
Di di di di di di
Di di di di di di
Di di di di di di di di di di

Has anyone mentioned Hallelujah, written by Leonard Cohen, sung by many, including Rufus Wainwright? Love it.

I heard there was a secret chord
That david played and it pleased the lord
But you don't really care for music, do you
Well it goes like this the fourth, the fifth
The minor fall and the major lift
The baffled king composing hallelujah

Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah

Well your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you
She tied you to her kitchen chair
She broke your throne and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the hallelujah

Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah

Baby i've been here before
I've seen this room and i've walked this floor
I used to live alone before i knew you
I've seen your flag on the marble arch
But love is not a victory march
It's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah

Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah

Well there was a time when you let me know
What's really going on below
But now you never show that to me do you
But remember when i moved in you
And the holy dove was moving too
And every breath we drew was hallelujah

Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah

Well, maybe there's a god above
But all i've ever learned from love
Was how to shoot somebody who outdrew you
It's not a cry that you hear at night
It's not somebody who's seen the light
It's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah

Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah

I did my best, it wasn't much
I couldn't feel, so I tried to touch
I've told the truth, I didn't come to fool you
And even though it all went wrong
I'll stand before the lord of song
With nothing on my tongue but hallelujah

Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah
Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah

Ticomaya,

Thanks for sending this. It really is very beautiful. And from the comments on YouTube seems to be very popular, too.

Kinda confused as to the biblical references, seems to talk about Bethsheba and then also Delilah as if the same woman.

But, I guess that does work after all . . .

Thanks for posting it!

Yep. I think John Cale's my favorite, though.

How about 'You Are So Beautiful' by Joe Cocker (some crappy oz tv show nominated it as the most romantic song ever).
