Fidel Castro has terminal cancer, according to "Time" magazine

WASHINGTON.- Cuban president, Fidel Castro, who underwent an abdominal surgical operation last July, suffers of terminal cancer and it is probable that he never retakes the power in Cuba, informed "Time".

The publication, that mentions anonymous sources from the United States intelligence service, said in its Internet page (www.time.com) that many in U.S.A. Government are convinced that Castro, 80 years old, "has terminal cancer and it will never return to the power".

"We have heard this for sure, this guy has terminal cancer", a government employee said.

Nevertheless, the magazine noticed: "the intelligence information could be mistaken" and that a government employee indicated "it is almost impossible to obtain a definitive test" on the present Cuban President's situation.

Raul Castro, 75 years old, has been in command of Cuba's Government since Fidel underwent the intestinal operation, and has not given indications that he will make changes in regime policies settled in 1959, indicated the magazine.

Ah, this is news?

Not to be snippy, but it has been obvious.
Castro isn't a hero of mine.

Still, could news facilities just get regular data straight?

When the last news of Fidel's imminent demise was reported, there was dancing in the streets of Miami.

The guy is pretty old and he will die.

Obviously whatever led him to turning over power to Raul was very serious and it certainly is more than likely that he is on his very last legs.

Castro is an amazing figure who has carved out a place in history that far exceeds the importance of his thoughts or deeds.

Too bad he didn't devote his considerable talents to more benign ends.

I've had similar thoughts Finn. Castro could have been great if he had followed what was originally preached, instead he became a fascist thug at the heel of the USSR. I hope better things are ahead for Cuba.

So do I, but I doubt they will be realized under Raul. The mere fact that Fidel is turning over power to anyone is sad testimony to how far he strayed from his original ideals. That he is turning power over to his brother is that much worse. Cubans can take heart though. Raul may be Fidel's younger brother but he is still a geezer.

Quote:
Castro does not have cancer and is in good spirits, says surgeon

The Guardian

A Spanish surgeon has curbed months of speculation on the health of Fidel Castro, announcing yesterday the Cuban leader does not have cancer and is in "fantastic" spirits as he slowly recovers from surgery.
At the request of Havana, Madrid surgeon José Luis García Sabrido travelled to Cuba last week to examine the 80-year-old leader, who has not been seen in public since July, when emergency surgery for intestinal bleeding forced him to temporarily cede power to his brother, Raúl.
Mr Castro's condition has since remained a state secret, fuelling rumours that he was dying - as well as much speculation about the future of post-Castro Cuba. The US intelligence chief, John Negroponte, told the Washington Post recently that Mr Castro would die within a few months.
"Without breaching confidentiality, I can tell you that President Castro does not suffer any malignancy," García Sabrido, a specialist in gastrointestinal cancer, told a press conference in Madrid upon his return. "It is a benign condition that has had a series of complications."

Dr García Sabrido added that Castro's mental health was "excellent" as he recovered "slowly but steadily" from the intestinal bleeding. "His intellectual activity is intact - I'd say fantastic - given the recovery from the previous surgery. He asks to return to work every day, but the doctors order rest."

Cuban officials have repeatedly denied rumours Mr Castro had a terminal illness such as stomach cancer, and they have maintained he would eventually return to public life. But his conspicuous absence from the limelight - including his 80th birthday celebration - have undercut those assurances. The most recent televised images, from October, depicted Mr Castro as a frail, elderly man, shuffling about his room, leafing through Granma.

The Castro check-up has ignited controversy in Spain as to whether it is proper for Dr García Sabrido, chief surgeon of a public hospital in Madrid, to treat an ailing dictator.

"Dictators and criminals have human rights," said Gustavo de Artístegui, a spokesman on foreign affairs for the conservative Popular Party, defending the unusual Cuban house call. According to a poll by the radio station Cadena Ser, the majority of Spaniards agree.

The conservative regional government of Madrid said it had been sending Mr Castro medicine and other supplies for the past five months at the request of the Cuban government.

"We give humanitarian aid to everyone who asks for it, but it is regrettable that this request comes from a dictator," said the head of the regional government, Esperanza Aguirre.

I read this article, also. Castro is old enough and ill enough, it doesn't have to be cancer that kills him. He appears to be at the brink, regardless.

i guess politicians just don't like giving up power .
while there seem to be plenty of things in american politics that make me uneasy , the rule that presidents can serve no more than two terms is one that i find very laudable .
i think the united nations should pass a rule making it mandatory for heads of state - and similar office holders - to retire after eight years - maximum !
i foresee a great deal of turmoil in cuba when castro eventually goes - one way or the other .
the smart thing would be to go NOW !

A bit of further speculation about the Horse's health:

1. The Spanish doctor said he had a benign condition.
2. The man has lost 20 kilos (44 pounds) in recents months, due to intestinal bleeding.
3. Spain has acknowledged that it is sending medicine to Castro since June.

Usually the word "benign" is related to a non-cancerous tumor.
Intestinal bleeding can be due to a tumor in the colon, to huge diverticulae, stomach or liver problems
A review on the type of medicines Cuba lacks, and Spain is among the top countries leads you, inevitably, to the liver.
The confidentiality of the Cuban government about the nature of Fidel's illness leads to the colon and the liver. One related with feces in the collective imagination; the other, with alcohol.

---

When the guy dies, they'll choose a proper date to fit with his death. Just like the Spanish Fascists did with Franco.
If he's about to die, a proper date would be either New Year's, January 8th or January 28th. Then, we'd have to jump until April.
We'll wait and see.

Are you serious?

The UN should pass a rule?

Who might follow it? Someone like Castro?

And if they didn't?

The Cuban leader Fidel Castro yesterday appeared on his country's state television for the first time in three months.
The 80-year-old leader, who was shown standing and chatting with Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez in Havana, looked stronger than previous images since he underwent an intestinal operation on July 27.

The video footage was taped on Monday during a two-hour private meeting, according to the state television.

Castro temporarily handed over power to his younger brother Raul Castro four days after the surgery in July.

On Jan. 16, the Spanish newspaper El Pais cited two doctors from the Gregorio Maranon hospital in Madrid as saying that Castro was in a "very grave" condition after three failed operations and complications from an intestinal infection.

The report ignited a lot of speculation over Castro's health.

Though the veteran Cuban leader has not made any public appearances since the surgery, he appeared on several video footages and delivered New Year's greetings to his countrymen on Dec. 30.

Last I read, he has had many complications of diverticulitis and rather miserable experiences with surgeries.

Diverticulitis. I love the way that word rolls off the tongue.
