Hi there,
I'm doing an assignment for my Early Middle Ages class, and one of the questions is a riddle left by a medieval scribe on a manuscript! Can anyone help me out? Here it is:
I am sitting above a horse which was not born,
Whose mother I hold in my hand.
Thanks!!
Andrea
Interesting. What is the country of origin?
Guessing....
Sawhorse.
Mother is the saw. (The saw I have in my hand)
Father hamer.
Together they made the sawhorse.
Sitting on a sawhorse, holding an acorn?
It maybe that the scribe had drawn (illuminated) a horse and had given it ?'life' (it's mother) with his quill
On of the most famous woodcuts of the medieval period was by Albrect Durer, 1471 - 1528 entitled "Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse." In his hand he would hold a knife.
Thanks so much for your help! The sawhorse answer made a lot of sense, so I used that one. We shall see if it's right!
Thanks again!
Andrea
