i think music is one of the greatest expressions of culture, yet it crosses cultural boundaries. on the one hand, some of the greatest classical musicians have non-european background--Yo Yo Ma & Midori are 2 of many examples. on the other hand, some of the greatest blues guitarists are not African-American--for instance, Eric Clapton & Jeff Beck. both classical music & blues would be impoverished if these musicians were restricted to performing music that originated in their home culture.
