Interesting song. I see why I thought the traditional song was by Woody. He recorded it too. Oh, well.

Jack Hardy died today of cancer. I thought it would be a good time to listen to one my favorite Hardy ballads, The Tinker's Coin.

Inspired by McTag. Here is a great story about Tam O' Shanter and The Cutty Sark.

I don't think Robert Burns needs an introduction.

@Letty,
Thanks for the story of the Cutty Sark. We are gathering quite a library of great tales here.

Speaking of songs that tell stories . . . I'm watching the DVD, Leonard Cohen Live in London. Wonderful. Great musicians as well.

@edgarblythe,
Love Thunder Road by Robert Mitchum. He really could sing.

The "Tsunami Dolphin" is quickly becoming an International story of hope. Some 12 days after the devastating earthquake in Japan and resulting tsunami, a finless porpoise has been rescued from a rice field in fair health.

Nearly a mile inland from the Japanese coastline, the dolphin was first spotted by a man - and later rescued by a 32-year old pet shop owner.

The rescuer, Ryo Taira, has been working since the natural disasters began in an effort to save pets and animals displaced by the catastrophic events.

"A man passing by said he had found the dolphin in the rice paddy and that we had to do something to save it," the 32-year-old Taira told Reuters.

Taira waded into the water and rescued the dolphin by hand, carrying it out. While he remains hopeful, he did caution, "I don't know if it will live, but it's certainly a lot better than dying in a rice paddy."

Rather reminded me of this dolphin, edgar.

It's nice to see people take time for an unfortunate animal. Didn't know Boy on a Dolphin. Not sure I understood it.

@edgarblythe,
That Boy on the Dolphin came from a movie starring Alan Ladd and Sophia Loren, edgar. It connected in the respect that the small dolpin will become a "pearl of great price" just as the Greek statue was.

@edgarblythe,
Wow! Loved Sara by "the jester", edgar.

Do you remember Tennyson's poem The Charge of the Light Brigade.

This one tells a story.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cBiUWQ5YLQ4&feature=related

Lord Ragland orders the British cavalry corps on a suicide mission to capture artillery guns protected by 19,000 Russian troops. About 500 or so(cant remember) of men are needlessly killed in what is later known as the Charge of the Light Brigade.

As I once observed, there's a snake in every family Tree.

@Letty,
Sara is autobiographical, letty.
The Charge of the Light Brigade can be seen as either incredible fidelity to duty or suicidal dumbness, I suppose.

Don't know of the man or his work, letty, but he certainly has a full schedule. The story in the trailer seems a bit simplistic, but it should be worth sitting through.

@edgarblythe,
Don't know Flat Land Hills, edgar, but Mamas always give good advice.

Love this poet. How about poems that tell stories?

http://www.litkicks.com/Images/eecummings.jpg

His poem:

in Just-
spring when the world is mud-
luscious the little
lame balloonman

whistles far and wee

and eddieandbill come
running from marbles and
piracies and it's
spring

when the world is puddle-wonderful

the queer
old balloonman whistles
far and wee
and bettyandisbel come dancing

from hop-scotch and jump-rope and

it's
spring
and
the

goat-footed

balloonMan whistles
far
and
wee

Unfortunately, that goat footed balloon man was a satyr
