Photograph of Mozart's widow discovered

A print of the only photograph taken of legendary composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's widow has been discovered in the archives of a German town.

The long-lost image of Constatnze Weber was taken in 1840 at the home of the composer Max Keller when she was 78 years old.

And the state archive in Altoettingen is adamant it was the only time she posed for a photo.

Weber was 29 years old when Mozart passed away in 1791. She went on to wed Danish diplomat Georg Nissen and died in 1842.

Oops! I posted the same story in the History forum.

Oh well, it's a neat story and deserves to be told twice.

Austrain papers are yesterday quoting a Vienna music historian, saying that this print/photo already had been publishes in a scientific music magazine in the 50's. Besides, he doubts it's an original photo from 1840.

However, no first sources are published yet to prove his statement.

The word at the classical musical forums is that this is not Constanze (great debate going on there) ...

Sounds and Fury

Update (9:54 PM Eastern on 7 Jul): Or maybe not. Agnes Selby, author of Constanze, Mozart's Beloved writes:

I am terribly sorry to disappoint people ..., but this is certainly not Constanze but someone's aunt.
The whole story was concocted by Keller's grandson. I[n] Australia we refer to such rantings as "dropping names". If with good luck for the name dropper the press gets hold of it, fame for the name dropper ensues.

Constanze Mozart was crippled by arthritis by 1840 and died in 1842. There is absolutely no way she could have traveled to visit Maximillian Keller during the period when the photograph was taken. Contrary to the statements made in the newspaper, Constanze had no contact with Keller since 1826. There is no evidence that she had corresponded with him or visited him.

more of Ms. Selby's comments at The Classical Music Guide forums

Quote:
Constanze's numerous diaries, some already published by the Mozarteum and edited by Genevieve Geffray, the chief librarian, reveal no such correspondence or visits. The archives where the unpublished letters are stored, contain no such reference either. Constanze copied all her letters in her diary as well as letters received by her.
Constanze kept a minute detail of her expenses in these diaries including a tip given to a waiter. It is therefore interesting to note that no mention of expenses of this journey or any other is mentioned in her diaries.

Herewith, as promised, the technical photographic opinion posted on a German website by Dr. M. Lorenz. The translation may not be up to scratch.

"There are no group portraits in the open air from 1840 as the Petzval
portrait objective (a kind of lens) was still in its early stages of development. Only with this objective was it possible to reduce the
exposure time to the extent that it became possible to photograph
people in the open air without blurring.

No independent technician or historian has been consulted by the city of
Altotting".

Regards,
Agnes.

I thought it was funny that one of the 'proofs' that it couldn't be Constanze is that she was too cheap to dye her hair.
