Usually, but not always, it lasts about three and a half months. For example, the first university i attended had two semesters of 16 weeks each, with a "vacation" of four weeks between semesters (that corresponded to the Christmas and New Years season). There was a "summer session" which lasted 14 weeks between the two semesters.

Later, i attended a university which divided the academic year into four quarters, each of twelve weeks with one week between each quarter which would have qualified as a "vacation" period. Most students did not attend the summer quarter, which effectively gave them a 14 week "vacation" in summer time.
