Sugar on a lettuce leaf? Really? It appears in a rather important retelling so it seems to maybe have some signifigance. It seemed to want to convey something major.

In terms of the lives of the
Cloudstreet families, this tells as that they were extremely poor (that was the most nutritious food they could afford) & had to work very hard just to keep their heads above water. Life was very tough for them. They had to stick together & support each other to survive.
