The Doris Day Animal League is seeking a new review of the Bureau of Land Management's (BLM) Wild Horse and Burro Program. BLM's management of wild horses and burros consists mainly of removing thousands of these animals annually from western rangelands to accommodate livestock that graze on the same lands. The BLM's policies are unsustainable and fly in the face of the Wild Horse and Burro Act created to protect these "living symbols of the historic and pioneer spirit of the West."

The last study, conducted in 1990 by the General Accounting Office (GAO), revealed many shortcomings in the BLM program, including the lack of rangeland improvement despite the mass removal of wild horses and burros. Many of the GAO findings have not yet been addresses and new problems have arisen.

Take Action: Contact your representative and senators to ask them to support a new GAO study of the BLM's Wild Horse and Burro Program. Send an Action Letter online at http://cw2k.capweb.net/ddal/letterstate.cfm or call the Capitol switchboard at (202) 224-3121

HORSE SLAUGHTER PREVENTION ACT GAINS ADDITIONAL SPONSORS

The American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act, to ban the trade in horsemeat and slaughter of live horses bound for human consumption has been reintroduced by Reps. John Sweeney (R-NY) and John Spratt (D-SC). "Many horses are hauled to slaughter and killed under inhumane conditions," said Representative Sweeny. "Some of the horses who are killed for this industry have been stolen or acquired under false pretenses and other animals may be wild horses illegally sold for their meat. The American people want the cruelty to end, and the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act will do that."

Currently the bill has 46 cosponsors. Find out of your representative is already a sponsor here: http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d108:h.r.00857:

Take Action: Ask your representative to support the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (H.R. 857). Send an Action Letter directly to Congressional members at http://cw2k.capweb.net/ddal/letterstate.cfm. Or call the Capitol switchboard at (202) 224-3121.

Your welcome quinn ~

I hope people read the text and understand what horses are forced to endure. We can stop the senseless killing by making our voices heard on behalf of those not able to speak for themselves.
