Hi Chai, glad you like the piccies. Want some pizza?

MG, I have no idea why you're laughing at this, it is supposed to be a quality piece of historical documentation I am trying to present, in an effort to impress Set and Farmerman. Please can you take me seriously.

I think I should have placed a comma between "me" and "seriously" back there, thinking about it.

Anyway, the weir is just a stones throw from the bridge in the very first picture, which means I am home again.

Round trip? About two and a half miles I suppose, up hill and down dale.

My house is about half a mile from where the original Cassiobury House (Earls of Essex's place) was situated. Various Earls kept the place going, until the last one to live there gambled most of the family money away, and shortly afterwards, the house mysteriously burned down (insurance?) and had to be completely demolished. This was around the late 1920's.

The estate was split up, half sold for housing....yipee, I live in one!...and the other half was made into public park and woodland, where I've just walked.

Here is a link to the house....well, when I say "house", a bloody Palace, more like. The only part that survives is the old side brick wall of the stables, which now forms part of a private nursing home.

Oooo, lovely! (And it's so the best thing when I'm reading along leisurely-like and see an aside addressed to me -- I see the stickybuds, indeed! That reminds me, I'd update that thread...)

I shall now go and see what I've got in the fridge, as the blackbird is now eating my pizza on the back lawn.

The things I do for A2K.....hmmmmmm.....

Soz, you couldn't tell me something, could you?

How does one get little bits of black plastic out from between one's teeth?

LordE - this is beautiful..... Our bluebells are blooming right now too. I pass a small patch of them on my way to work. I love the path that runs along the golf course and the river views. Those canals, that almost-doesn't-look-handmade quality, is so English countryside to me.

Everything I have seen so far, Lord Ellpus, pales in comparison to the verdant surroundings in which I reside.

Please try to find something to stifle my yawn.

Weird or what?

Sorting through my Mum's paperwork yesterday, I found a Calendar that she had been sent free of charge from her local council. On the front cover of the calendar, is a photo of the view from the bridge (remember photo 1 of this thread?)....taken in 1921.

I went to the same spot yesterday evening, and tried to take a photo of the same view. The trees are now much bigger (surprise surprise....85 years later) and the little lock keepers cottage has now gone, but you can still make out the similarities in land fall, etc.

Bridge view 1921....(sorry about the quality..scanned from glossy cover)

Same view now, trying to re-create black/white/sepia..not very well.

NOTE: See the two wooden lock gate arms in the bank on the left? They were the old ones, taken off about ten years ago and made into a couple of bench type seats. They're probably the same ones that the man is operating in the top photo.

and in colour......uncropped.

ellpus, those photos were great, I want a digital camera, can you recommend anything for under £50, or at that price range will the quality be bad?

I've seen little ones in Tesco for £25, is it not worth buying them?

Hi Smorgs, I bought mine when digital cameras were still a novelty, so paid a much higher price than one would cost today. Mine is small but sturdy, and fits in my pocket. The camera, however, is a Konica "Digital Revio KD-400Z. It has 4 million pixels, which is pretty much all you need for snaps. If you bought a similar model with similar capabilities now, I would imaginr that it would be about £120 new.

My advice? Get Which?Camera or other similar type magazine, read up on what user surveys say is the best model around, and see if you can find it on that well known auction site, or a camera shop (jessop's is good) that sells "used", as people trade in to buy a bigger, better one.

I'm happy with this one for now, but eventually I will go for something more flash.

Gald you like the piccies.

MG, when you buy a camera, it usually comes with a CD-Rom, which you just stick in and load up. Mine was simple....and if I can do it, anyone can.

One thing that I would recommend when buying a camera, try to get one that has it's own battery cell, which is re-chargeable. This is much better, IMO, than one that uses duracell type batteries.

When you buy a camera, also buy a spare battery cell, and a bigger memory chip, if you can afford the extra dosh. It saves SO much hassle and disappointment, like when you take the camera out to take snaps of an excursion, the blody battery dies after two shots.
With a re-charged spare in your pocket (about half the size of an "after eight" mint) ....no problem. Snap away!
