Well done!

Very Happy

I really have no idea what it could be called, not even in my first language.
Along the Danube there are special rounded "things" where, when the boats had to change the course, the pulling ropes were run across. These had to be smoth and round to protect the ropes, so they wouldn't fray.
Something in this line?

Could the metal arm with a metal handle be used to tie up horses when they were not pulling the barges?

BBB

No, BBB, the arm is one of the lock gates, and I'm sure they wouldn't have tethered a horse to one of those, as they may cause damage to the mechanism.

In those days, most of the Canal system ran through farm/woodland, so they would have just tied the horse up nearby (usually next to the little pubs that dotted the route, no doubt) when they moored up for the night.

A Capstan, perhaps?

Danube? Are you Hungarian? Austrian?

I slept in a Hungarian house next to the Danube, and was attacked by a swarm of mosquitos every night.

Mosquitos- no fun.
Hope you had a good time nevertheless.

I am Austrian. We often use the old towpath along the Danube for biking. One day we met an old fisher who pointed out these stones. They look a bit like a bollard, but they were called differently.

Had a GREAT time in Budapest!

Didn't have time to do Austria though, but it's on my list!

Regarding the "bollards", I bet that Farmerman will post on here, giving the answer, but shrouding it in loads of nautical terminology.

AVAST THERE, SHIPMATES!

That's why, dear Ellpus, one of the towns on the banks of Danube is named Komarom - literally meaning Mosquito town. You get used to it after awhile.

I demand more pictures!

Thanks, Osso. (and lk, I've just seen you and re-edited)

I think it was just the light that was perfect, that particular morning.

I'll post a few more, but I think the one above is the best of the lot.

In actual fact, I think I'll stick that one (previous page) on a separate thread, for people's best shot of the year or something.

It was a stroke of luck, actually. My mate just stopped me as we were walking (he used to be the photo editor for a large, national Sunday Newspaper) and said "Look at that! Now THAT would make a perfect photo...I wish I had my camera".

I felt around in my pocket, remembering I'd stuffed my camera in there a few days before, and hey presto!

He was right, of course. We were standing in a very shaded spot, so it highlighted the darkness of the wood, AND the gorgeous sunlight in the distance, a double whammy really.

Twenty yards on, and it looked completely different.

I'll post it again in a minute, with the "twenty yards on" pic, just so you can see the difference.

No wonder he was a photo editor.

These pictures, especially the previous one, are indeed stunning, and
I can't believe the sun is shinning in England Wink

Gives you almost and urge to walk into these woods, doesn't it?

The sun ALWAYS shines in England, CJ.

It may be behind a big layer of cloud most of the time, but us Brits KNOW it's up there somewhere...

My 2nd favourite photo from that day............

Fisherman on the Canal....with ducks. (quite an artistic title, methinks)

Walking across the Canal bridge the other day, I spotted a Kingfisher!

Rare as hen's teeth in these parts, I can tell ee.

Anyhoo, he's been there for a little while now, and appears to have taken up residence somewhere nearby.

I took the camera with me this morning (Gawd, I must get a decent one with a terrific zoom lens), hoping he would be there again.

He was!

Excuse the quality of the pics, but as soon as I tried getting "up close" he buggered off.
