Google Trends, which works out how many searches have been done via the Internet search engine on particular terms, showed the word "lonely" was entered most frequently by Internet users in Ireland: http://www.google.com/trends?q=lonely.
The Irish [..] are followed in the misery stakes by residents of Singapore and New Zealand -- although Singaporeans are the most frequent searchers of "happiness."
Google Trends calculates the ratio of searches for a given term coming from each city, region or language divided by total Google searches coming from the same area.
There's more; in the Washington Post, Howard Kurtz quotes Andrew Sullivan.
"Google has a new feature called Google Trends . It tracks the number of searches for various topics online, and also gives you some regional analysis of where those searches are taking place. [..]
And here's a somewhat revealing discovery. Who's looking for 'sex' the most? The countries with the most searches for that word is - surprise! - Pakistan, followed by Egypt, Iran, India, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia and Turkey. Hmmm. It couldn't have anything to do with all that Muslim repression, could it? Arabic is the most popular language for 'sex' searches. [..]

Intriguingly, "sex" may be most eagerly googled among Pakistanis, Egyptians and Iranians, but "masochism" is a bigger hit among Romanians than anyone else, by far.
