These hexapods aren't considered insects anymore.

They have a furcula on the abdomen..

The very same, Ros!

I believe that's because recent genetic studies suggest that the Collembola are a separate evolutionary line from the other Hexapoda.

It's not a Triton.

This animal lives in the Eastern US, and is a large salamander. These can get to be 2 feet long.

I wondered if it might be something like that. For some reason Salamanders have always been associated with fire, but I'm not sure why (amphibians don't seem all that fire resistant to me).
