german television will be showing a...POPE CARTOON... .
the catholic church has applied to the courts to have the show banned .
it seems to me that showing the church and the pope have a "fun side" , cannot possible be harmful to the church , or am i wrong ?

Well, this certainly will guarantee a huge audience, at least for the initial episodes.

hope it will be shown in north-america . i'd certainly watch it .
can't really understand what the catholic church finds objectionable .
perhaps someone watching the show in europe can fill us in .

I wonder how long it will be before that image pops up as an avatar?

pope comic
just checked german newspaper ("sueddeutsche" - linked below to german article).
it's getting quite funny/serious/convoluted .

three shows have been screened and passed by "voluntary self-control" of german tv.

the shows will not be aired right away .

a berlin tv-network will air one of the episodes "embedded" in a discussion program between church representatives , media reps and politicians .

some of those objecting to the airing of the show , had some time ago argued for free speech and against a ban of the danish mohamed cartoons . they are now arguing that more sensitivity most be shown towards religion and religious themes .
(i don't see what it has to do with religion).

someone said , that is the best "free advertising" for MTV - probably right on .

the things people have to worry about .

Four hundred years ago the church would have vehemently objected, possibly with the heads of the satirists, but I think they've grown too much to get caught in that trap again. Otherwise, they'll look like the bunch of fanatical muslims who protested over the Mohammed cartoon. Unlike Islam Catholicism has extricated itself from the middle ages. I hope!

But they still can't figure out when a story is just a story. Long live Dan Brown!

pope cartoon
the catolic church in bavaria and politicians of the (ruling) german "christian-socialist union" party have indeed protested quite loudly and have asked the courts to intervene .
the show's producers are in the meantime getting a good deal of free advertising and prospective listeners are phoning in , asking that the show be aired .
perhaps everyone is happy now ?
