Here's a word game I'm sure you've heard of:
start with a word and by switching, adding or taking away it's letters one by one, transform it into another given word. However, each time a change is made, it must be an actual word, in english, not an abbreviation or slang, and scrambling the letters to make a different word is not allowed. Proper nouns are allowed with a common spelling. For example, here's boy to man:
BOY
BAY
MAY
MAN
What I'm wondering is,
1. Are there any 2 three letter words that cannot be changed into each other?
and
2. Is there any three or four letter word that can not be changed into another word with JUST ONE CHANGE?
Any possibilites would be appreciated
thouché, how about 3 letter words with 1 change or 4 letters with 2?
lynx -> lynn (woman's name - proper noun with a common spelling)
lynx -> jynx (type of woodpecker)
zinc -> zing (a shrill humming noise)
How about juju?
From m-w.com:
Main Entry: ju·ju
Pronunciation: 'jü-(")jü
Function: noun
Etymology: of West African origin; akin to Hausa jùju fetish
1 : a fetish, charm, or amulet of West African peoples
2 : the magic attributed to or associated with jujus
hymn
ugh (m-w.com says ush is a word, but you have to subscribe to see the definition. Their dictionary includes names, abbreviations, etc. A very quick search on the web for ush turned up nothing.)
You are also allowed to change the letter order according to Selmar's original posting. So those last one's don't cut it either.
I believe I said "scrambling the letters to make a different word is not allowed".
Comprehension failure - d'oh!
Now Selmar, go back to 'this or that' and give us a choice!
