And the Rains Came Down for Earth Day, 2006

In the Greater Scheme of the Universe I'm sure that a Drenching April Rain is a Good Thing. Besides, I've been picking up roadside trash for a month now. Gaia loves me, this I know....

If Gaia takes my opinions into account, Gaia does not love the drinkers of bottled water and the smokers of Marlboro Lite who keep their vehicles clean by throwing their trash out the window.

What are you doing--or what had you planned to do if the weather were benign--for Earth Day? Organized? Free Lance? Heavy duty improvement? Tokenism?

apparently we're skipping 2006

I hadn't planned to do anything meaningful today - but I'd hoped to take the ferry to the Toronto Islands with Set and the dogs today. That's a bit washed out now <wrinkling> There was going to be some good outdoors as a pack time.

Can't even hang the clothes out to dry, though I'm known in the neighbourhood for causing rain by hanging my clothes out.

I'm xeriscaping, using a clothesline, bought a bicycle at the end of last summer, using public transit whenever possible - working on my think globally, act locally challenge for this year ---> less car use.

The mayor of our city promoted a 20-minute cleanup yesterday afternoon. At 2 p.m. the offices of the city sent out their staff with small bags to do what they could. It was a nice spring day for it, as well.

The condo building that I moved into in January backs onto a ravine, which is conservation ground in this city. There is a walking path through it, and judging from what I can see from my balcony, the bottled-water drinkers and the smokers have been busy here through the winter as well. A group of us from the condo are going out at 10 a.m., armed with garbage bags and gloves, to do some clean-up.

The weather turned gusty and rainy overnight, so I expect the group will not be a large one.

On the upside to the current April rains - the rhubarb in the backyard is looking splendid (about a month ahead of schedule).

the rain won't hurt the rhubarb as long as it's in cans....

Thanks for that link, dadpad.

I've just put it in my favourites.

It's a great reminder of our 'inversosity'.

not as cold as I'd thought it would be though

Quote:
Current Temp: -2.1°C
Overnight Temp: -1°C
Forecast Max Temp: -1°

Those are nice moderate numbers to my skin.

Heres some photos of the Maritimes area , as seen from Passamaquoddy Bay,

http://www.easternmaineimages.com

Here is where they wish to build 2 large Liquified Natural Gas offshore terminals (LNG). The Canadian Govt, since the LNG carriers will have to ply Canadian waters for a bit, s having none of it because they are convinced its a fragile environment and the fish restoration need not be a sword of a catastrophe hanging overhead.

Glad to see all you people.

I've been saving the sleeves from the morning newspapers and using them as disposable gloves for my trash collecting efforts. Most of the sleeves can't be recycled, but reuse also reduces the landfill.

I went in and picked up some used books to read yesterday - will forward them to another friend in a couple of weeks. We figure 3 or 4 readers to a book is a good "use less/reduce/re-use" plan. I think I'll put a Bookcrossing sticker in them, so they can be set free after our group is done with it.

Two big (garbage bag size) of too-big clothes are ready to be donated to Goodwill later today.

I believe in setting books free, but the double congratulations come from the Goodwill discards. May you walk even more lightly on the earth in weeks to come.
