What goes into the water black and comes out red?

oh, I was thinking it had to be the same object.

All I was coming up with was chessman, thinking there was some subliminal connection.

I think it is the same answer.

Metal, or iron, or what have you.

It goes into the water red when it's heated and comes out black once it's cool. It also can go into the water black, and comes out red (rusted).

maybe for the second one:

An African put in boiling water, he's black when you put him in, and probally red when you get him out.
