I'm afaid this "word salad" is a fine illustration of your specific need for a such a course. Your main problem appears to be a parochial concept of "academia" which mitigates against effective communications. You need to understand that when you naively use the term "prestigious University of the West Indies" your action completely negates the word "prestigious" !

There is a skills improvement program out there called "MY ACCESS" . Its meant to improve the writing skills of high school students and its got a great track record here in LAncaster County where teachers have used it to aid their students in "focusing' and using appropriate language in theme writing.
Your writing could , perhaps, benefit from this program. It may seem counterintuitive to you but using what you now feel is "scholarly language and sentence structure", just isnt. You dont practice the first rules of good technical writing
"Be precise and concise", we arent paid by the word.

Indeed. For example:

Frankly speaking, one could deem the lack of preparation and insight surrounding this course by the Department as an insult to the lecturer. Our time and certainly that of the lecturer would have been maximized had the Department made a greater input in the construction of the course bearing in mind the specific language needs of the student at the relevant level. The course would have even been more useful had it been executed at the beginning of the programme, rather at the very end.
