Of course it works. The idea is to be realistic in your goals, and work at the end goal in small steps. A lot of people will become discouraged, when they set a lofty goal for themselves, and then give up, because the end goal is too far away.

Little by little is the way to set your goals.

Setting goals helps because it aids you in focusing your attention on things that help achieve your goals and possibly allowing you to avoid those things or energies that might be spent working against your goals.

Make realistic goals, not ones that might really be impossible to achieve.

If necessary, break huge goals down into littler step by step goals which are not only easier to achieve but also help to inspire you along your quest to your ultimate goals.
