Not really, but my family surprised me with a grow light set-up for my birthday a couple weeks ago and today I started some herbs and greens to enjoy indoors. I don't know if they'll work, but what the heck, it was fun getting my hands dirty.
I also started a few flowering plants that are perfect for containers. I'll try to get them going far enough that I can put them in containers in a sunny south window for awhile and then start some more in March for use outdoors.
I'm afraid I lost most of my perennials in last summer's drought. It took me five years to get everything looking good and I can't possibly replace everything in one year. Having the grow lights will let me start lots of annuals to fill in outside while I see what survived and what didn't.
Oh, what a nice present!
I tried growing things from seeds last year, amongst much "it ain't so easy, grasshopper" advice, the seed to seedling part went swimmingly, but I never got 'em to survive outside. Not sure why.
It was probably something to do with the way they were hardened off (or weren't hardened off, as the case may be). It's a slow two week process if you don't have a cold frame.
I have baby arugula, mesculin greens, and spinach this morning. Hehe, I love pretending it's spring.
