Just wanted to suggest a mental exercise:

Imagine that I am in possession of some sort of weapon (nuclear or biological) that could destroy all life on the planet. For whatever reason, I have lost most normal human impulses such as self-preservation and familial instinct. My logical faculties are still working fine. Also assume that I am going to destroy all life unless I find some reason not to. Could you give me a logical reason why life should be preserved?

I thought you said your were leaving, Momma Angel.

And here I find you on another thread.

How are we ever going to establish trust between us?

I meant I was leaving Eva's Wine Cellar. And I promise you, Gus. I knew you meant that as a joke and so did I.

You stole my answer. That's exactly what came to mind the instant I read that first post. Not like it would be an uncommon answer, though...

Re: Convince Me
You say that your logical faculties are sound? Then how could you destroy all life because you would soon rationalize that you would not be able to survive alone. Therefore, even though your instinct for self-preservation might have gone away, your logical faculties will not let you destroy anything!

There is no logical reason reason why life should be preserved.

No, I contradicted myself. The answer is you are not here in this world simply because of the survival instinct. Because if survival alone was the reason to live life, no one would ever commit suicide, right? Therefore, because of your desire to destroy the world, this desire itself will work against you because your logical or rational faculties will kick in and make you see that you cannot survive alone and so get somewhere. The main point being that survival here is not the issue, but getting somewhere in the world is. And you cannot get somewhere unless there are people everywhere, or who would you show your accomplishment to? So, your logical faculties will not let you destroy the world!

As the earth currently contains the only thinking beings that we know of, it could be argued that no matter how illogical humanity gets, the world should be spared for logic's sake.

Responding to Beena: In this situation, when I destroy all life, it will kill me as well. As soon as everyone else is dead I will be too. So surviving alone will not be an issue.

You would never wipe out life anyway. It would prevail in some form or other no matter how hard you nuke it.

my 'reason' coincides with the most important question that preoccupies my existence; my curiosity into what is going to happen next...................
while your extreme solution to the human experiment answers the question,
i prefer allowing the question to persist, leading always, through the profoundly perplexing twists and turns toward (dare i say it) the 'future'.
[it is a journey, fraught with pitfalls and challenges that. never the less. is well worth taking!]

Pupil, No no no no no no. You already assumed you are there. Of course if you're there, where the world is destroyed, then you have no use for your life as well and so survival won't be significant anymore. But you're not there. BEFORE you're there, that's what it's all about. And you will not be able to get there, where you destroy the world, because your logical faculties being sound, they won't let you destroy the world.

I'm not sure exactly what you're saying Beena. Are you saying that my logical faculties wouldn't allow me to prepare for a plan that would end my own survival?

Specifically, the part I don't understand is "BEFORE you're there, that's what it's all about" "That" referring to survival I assume. What is this statement (that survival is what it's all about) based on? Putting biology aside (remember my normal instincts are not functioning), why should we hold this logical principle?

Well, considering that you didn't just nuke everyone on the spot, and still have hesitation, that would suggest that there is a part of you that doesn't really want to do it.

I don't think a logical reason not to (which I don't think there are any; I'd just bs something) would stop the person anyhow. I think the only way would be some sort of emotional appeal or vanity appeal. Possibly something which would make the person feel even smarter by not doing it.

Pupil,
Look, survival is not an issue for you because that instinct doesn't work, right? Leave that aside. Your logical faculties are working and because by destroying the world you want to get somewhere, let's assume that you would like to conquer it. Now your logic will also tell you that once the world is destroyed or you have conquered it in that way, then there would be no one to show your accomplishment to. And since desire to achieve something is behind all this and not the will to survive, since you won't have anyone to show to, what you desired and achieved, your logic will not let you destroy the world.

Beena, you misunderstand my motivation for destroying the world. I don't want to do it for accomplishment or to achieve any real goal. I'm just doing on a whim because I see no reason not to.

My only reason for destroying life is that there is no reason not to destroy it.
