What the hell is a gonenest?

I stumbled across a photo of this....

http://www.sarpysam.net/gallery/albums/structures/gonenests.sized.jpg

He has them labeled as "gonenests". I've never heard of that particular term, so I googled it and was directed back to this guy's blog.

Apparently it is a word of his choosing, but I would be interested in finding out what sort of bird makes such a nest.

I can't believe I just had to put the s on the end of that. Actually, what those look like are the nests of dirt daubers. Dirt daubers are wasp-like insects. They are mostly red with a little black on them. They are very common here in Louisiana. That is what their nexts look like. They are found under eaves of buildings everywhere here. I don't think that they sting but they are aggressive. They will chase you.

I do not know what their real name is. They call them dirt daubers.

I'd say those were swallows nests....scroll half way down linked page.

I've been around mud daubers all my life, never seen a nest look like that, they tend to be small tubes all stuck together, and normally no bigger than your fist....perhaps 20 tubes or so.

2PacksAday,

Yes, I'd say you are definitely correct. Those definitely do look like the swallows nest. I'm not sure I ever got that close to a dirt daubers nest that I could tell it had tubes! I hate those things!

I'm so glad that you straightened that out.

Your welcome

My shed is full of them, always has been, so I've been very up close and personal with them way too many times.

The nests around here are not quite shaped like the ones on that page, they actually look like dirt clods stuck to the wall or ceiling or basically anwhere. They are fun to watch while they gather mud, when I was a kid I used to find them a lot in the summer under window unit air conditioners....but since the advent of central air units, I don't see them in action so much anymore.

I have never actually seen them building a nest. I imagine it would be pretty interesting. We mostly have them on the garage and sheds around here. Every once in awhile they will fall to the ground. Then it's hard to tell them from the little mud mounds the mudbugs make! Laughing

I guess the above image, graciously supplied by 2packsaday, would confirm that what I saw were indeed the nest of swallows, particularly because my image and the above one both originated from Montana.

The swallows around my part, while building similar nests, have much smaller openings.

I guess the swallows in these parts are a little warier of intrusion than the Montana variety.

I would like to thank everyone who participated in this thread and would now suggest everyone go back to their daily routines.

Nothing more to see here. Move along please.
