Keep writing everyone, perhaps we should talk about the weather; fine, blustery, but only 18 degrees here.

Lovely to meet you again Clary, are you well my friend? Will try to match you on some of the other threads nothwithstanding your clever word power.

My word, what a flamboyantly, blatant bit of flattery flummery that was!

Nevertheless it was very welcome and I am only sorry I didn't see it early enough to thank Dutchy profusely in person.

Perfectly welcome, my dear zuiplap, and I am honoured by your presence on the humble thread on which I happen to have set my unworthy pawprint.

Really, all we are doing is being extremely polite and socially sensitive, I would have thought anyone might be expected to do that, Mame; are you against such behaviour?

Still laughing at the fine frippery talk - are you two of the Victorian era?

'Tis but one hundred and fifty years agone, my dear. Mock not the manners of yesteryear.

X-pressing oneself in polite repartee and riposte allows one to get to know another as an acquaintance without running the risk of them calling you 'friend'. Thus, if by chance, the roof collapsed and you were trapped in the same room as the chimney sweep, you could pass the time of day with him while awaiting rescue without the worry that your family and friends would snub you for socialising with the lower classes.
