He was elected when he ran against a black, female Labour candidate, and won because he was so vehemently against the Iraq war, and has very strong views about giving the Palestinians their own country.

Bethnal Green (his constituency) has the highest concentration of Muslims in Britain, and that is why he picked it when he decided to stand for election.
