This is not an aussie idiom :wink: I was just toying with yous. :-)
Hitting the sack means going to bed. The term comes from the 1800's when folks used straw for bedding. When they changed the straw, they punched the bed to soften the straw and also to get rid of the critter pests.
Thus, the phrase...."Hitting the sack"
