Wow.... in college (almost 20 years ago) I did a massive paper on yugoslavia. I discussed it's history, it's economy, it's natural resources, the rail system, the landscape, the cultures/religions........
But, much of that has changed by now between the war and the reconstruction.
I also know that some european friends go there to vacation along the coastline.
Is it very beautiful?

Zoran Djindjic was a good politician and good for the Serbian
people. As the first non-communistic Prime Minister, he could have brought Serbia to a new democratic understanding.
Unfortunately, he was assassinated in 2003.

i agree, croatia has the most beautiful seacoast in the world. Been there many a time.
Some Serbia free association: June 28 1389 Kosovo Polje, June 28 1916 - Ferdinand's assassination, Kusturica, Vuk Karadzic, Kosovo, Milosevic, Kostunica, Haague, NATO, Russia, grilled meat pljeskavica, Vojna Krajina.... ummm lot more. These were just first that sprang to mind.

Serbia and the Serbs have been a disaster for the Balkans. Although it may no longer be true, for many centuries Serbs behaved as though those with whom they shared the Balkans were inferior beings, fit only to serve a Greater Serbia. One can only hope that the Serbs, as a people, have begun to grow up, and will not in future trouble their neighbors as they had so consistently done in the past. However, the last 15 years don't give much hope of that.

Sure, Mirage, the Serbs are all sweet, cuddly people who would never invade their neighbors, slaughter non-combatants, rape women, and otherwise carry on like savages . . . what could i have been thinking ? ! ? ! ?

Set, I believe most nations have that somewhere in their history, Americans notwithstanding. But it hasn't always been like that in Serbia. Quite contrary, in 19th century Serbs were the 'pets' of the West, for their art and culture, for their historical role - serving as a natural barrier against Otoman Empire - many Serbs volunteered to guard the Vojna Krajina - the boundaries of Christendom if you will, living on the front line... There is no denying the bloody turmoil Serbia partook in, but nothing in this world is fully black or fully white.

The problem is that people do not understand that crimes come from personality, not from the nation. There is crime and evil all over the world, that is why I said that Setanta wasn't right. Don't feel roll-called.
PS. Thank you Jane.

I wonder if being "under the propaganda" means that the imposition of the Serbs on the administration of society throughout Yugoslavia under the leadership of Josip Broz is just a figment of my imagination. I wonder if "being under the propaganda" means that Serbs were not put into the key leadership positions in the Yugoslav military in the days of Josip Broz. I wonder if being "under the propaganda" means that the Serbs did not really use the Yugoslav army to attempt to subjugate Slovenia and Croatia in 1991 and 1992. I wonder if being "under the propaganda" means that the Serbs did not fund and equip the Bosnian Serbs. I wonder if being "under the propaganda" means that Bosnian Serbs did not set up and run rape camps. I wonder if being "under the propaganda" means that the Bosnian Serbs did not shell Sarajevo day after day, for years on end. I wonder if being "under the propaganda" means that thousands were not killed by Bosnian Serb snipers. I wonder if being "under the propaganda" means that there never were Serbian death squads operating in Bosnia, Montenegro and Kosovo. I wonder . . .
You jokers must think people are really stupid . . .

Dagmaraka, I assume that your post saying that Archduke Ferdinand was assasinated in 1916 was a typo? You and I both know that it was 1914.
Set, you under the propaganda again? What'cha doin' down there? BTW, some Zionists are terribly pro-Serb because they say the Serbians were fierce opponents of Hitler and the Nazis. But that was mainly because their partizan groups were all commanded by closet Communists.

I would be at pains at this point to note the nature of the question which is titular to the thread. It does not ask what i think of Serbs. I don't have a very high opinion of them en masse, it is true--but i recognize that individuals may be decent, honest people.
The titular question asks what my opinion of Serbia is--and that opinion is that Serbia has been a trainwreck for Europe since at least 1878 . . .

I have no major opinions about Serbia. There is a rather self-absorbed obnoxious Croatian man I know from around these parts but I tend to see him as an exception. I remember a few children from back in my school days from what was then Yugoslavia, Mira and someone else who I can not for the life of me remember the name of...they were very nice people. I have never been to Serbia so I have no idea what my feelings would be about the climate or the demeanor of the people living there.
I do know that it exists and that in my opinion is good to know if I am ever asked to name a nation other than Syria or Spain starting with the letter S.

Like Setanta, I have absolutely no grudge against the Serbian people. Back in my university days I was pretty close friends with a guy, born here, whose parents were Serbs. He was a great guy, a painter, motorcycle freak and (at the time) in appearance could have been a stand-in for Marlon Brando on the set of "The Wild One." He came from the Pittsburg, PA area which has a large concentration of various Slavic immigrants, Serbs among them. Wonder whatever became of Bo. But, again to echo Set, the question was about Serbia, not Serbs. And the country's impact on Europe has not been a positive one.
