I think there should be a Weight graded class. Afterall, we truck-shaped men and women haul more cargo the same distance, shouldn't we get something for that?

Seems right to me, and might be a good idea for the race, even a Very Good Idea (yeh, I know weight can lodge in muscle, but still).

I never read the permission letter agreements, I'm sure it says that even if the city serves poisoned water at the fuel stops, it's still my fault. It's like being married to my first wife every time.
no doubt

You only beat 48% in your age group?

Next time, fill your pockets with those acorns and drop a few in front of the other geezers at those crosswalks.

I like the way you think, I'd be ashamed of myself for even thinking such thoughts, but you make it sound good. Of course, for it to work, I'd have to be IN FRONT of them.

Oh. Um...yeah.

Wait. Doesn't everyone have his/her own chip? How do you know when they started? They might have started way before you, or even after you. Hmm. Can't take any chances...drop the acorns anyway.

Braving a downpour, more than 10,000 runners made their way through Times Square Sunday morning during the first NYC Half-Marathon.

This is our merry band traversing the Times Square River. (It wasn't that bad.) When the rain was coming down the hardest I yelled out "Hey, is this one of the misting stations?" Broke the whole crowd up.

That's me in the white hat just to the right of the hugely tall guy. He must have been 6'7" or more. He trundled along, just another participant in the World's Largest Wet Tee-shirt Contest.

Actually that is not me. I was way behind this bunch.

See that cop on the right? I can guarantee you that in about 5 second he will be studying the ass of the woman in the yellow shirt.

No doubt about it.

Many times, Gus, I have talked with my trainer about using mental images to spur oneself forward during times of weariness and fatigue.

During a race, he would say, you sometimes have to steel yourself by thinking about the ones you love the most in the world. By putting the image of your home, your family, your beloved, firmly in your mind you can gain the fortitude to carry you on to the finish.

I often think about what he said.

But, most of time what I do is try to spot a well filled out pair of short shorts and do my damnedest to get close enough for a good look-see.

See the tall guy in the white suit, way in back? I wonder who he's checking out?

If I ever see him again, I'll tell him you were interested.

A final note: (Is this the most obtuse vanity thread on A2K or what?)

I got the splits back from the Half Marathon

5k
36:49

10K
1:13:58

15K
1:47:31

Slow as can be. 11:55 per mile. The First five I was chock-a-block with people and the second five was mostly uphill and the third five it was pouring rain, so 11:55 per mile.... like a turtle, not fast, steady.

But hold on...

my time was 2:21:18 meaning that I covered the last 3.8 miles in 30:45 in a pace of (hang on to your hats) 8:00 mins per mile. That is, for me, flying. And yes, the course was flat to slightly downhill but still,,,,, .

Races coming up

Short four miler next Saturday, then one, possibly two half marathons in October, (Jesus, he's getting serious) and then two races in November to qualify for next year's marathon and a couple in December for good measure.

Are you going to do any speed work?
Yes, I'm serious.
You can work in some intervals or hill repeats.
The intensity doesn't have to be crazy, just bumped up a bit.

I'll be doing "telephone pole" intervals this week.

I know you have a race coming up George, but I don't remember when it is (was). Last weekend, this coming weekend, neither?

Not this weekend, but the the one after (Sept.16).
I dropped off my entry this morning, so -- frugal soul that I am -- I am
now committed. I've got to raise the intensity a bit in the next week or so.
My goal: to pass at least one kid I used to coach.
