OM is Sanskrit letter or a symbol (for the "sacred" Hindu) sound om (aum) called "the mother of all mantras. Apparently, the four parts symbolize four stages of consciousness: Awake, sleeping, dreaming, and a trance or transcendental state. It is supposed to have all the vibrations of the universe.

Therapeutically, several and repeated experiments in its vibrations have conclusively proved its curative, sedative and healing effects. Psychologically, the incessant mental repetition of this creative Word, results in the wholesome and personality-integrating physiological effect of a deep track made in the brain, effectuates a sublimation of the conational substance, a transmutation of mind"s crude energies, and, in consequence, exerts an awakening and formative impact upon the inner life.

Can speaking of Om actaully cure diseases?

No. But practicing it can IMO. Mind over body is a powerful thing. It's used in yoga and other meditations. Bring your body functions into alignment and it has a better ability to heal itself. Just hearing it though? No. I'd really doubt that.

The full mantra goes:

OM Mani Padmi OM ... Om Mani Pami OM ...

The "M" in Om is drawn out. Mani and Padmi are rendered with the emphasis on the first syllable. Thus, Ma-ni and Pad-mi.

This mantra is widely used in a number of Buddhist schools, and is the "lynch-pin" of the Diamond Sutra. The Sanskrit pronunciation doesn't always survive translation into more modern languages, yet it is still credited with great power.

I believe that what power this, or other mantras, possess is not supernatural at all, but a by-product of forcing the practitioner to focus the mind to the point where other thoughts find it difficult to intrude. Thus focused, the practiontioner can "ignore" thirst, hunger, pain, heat and cold. This can be powerful stuff when employed by a practiced and disciplined adept. However, mantras are only one tool out of a much larger toolbox, and the student should become practiced with more than one technique.

Bokonon says In the beginning, God created the earth, and he looked upon it in His cosmic loneliness.
And God said, "Let Us make living creatures out of mud, so the mud can see what We have done." And God created every living creature that now moveth, and one was man. Mud as man alone could speak. God leaned close as mud as man sat up, looked around, and spoke. Man blinked. "What is the purpose of all this?" he asked politely.
"Everything must have a purpose?" asked God.
"Certainly," said man.
"Then I leave it to you to think of one for all this," said God.

And He went away uttering "Aum"

No, it can't cure diseases, unless the disease happens to be stress. It can be quite good for easing stress, but that's about it.

Luckily though, easing stress is good for you anyway.

Well, often stress will either cause or exascerbate illness. It is not a huge conceptual leap to believe that the control of stress would enable a body to heal itself much more efficiently.

Can it cure diseases? YES! If you believe it can.... For very interesting text on the power of the mind and religion please read 'The Holographic Universe' quite interesting...

Also Asherman.... The mantra you mentioned is a Tibetan Buddhist Mantra (as you noted) and is much different from the 'om' inquired about by vinsan. And the 'Padmi' in the mantra is actually padme pronounced more like 'pay-me'.
There are millions of mantras, many of them begin (and end) with OM.... Think of it more like 'Religious quotation marks' Beginning with an Om sets the stage so to speak, clearing the path for the sacred uttereance to follow. Ending with an Om is much the same as saying over and out.

Plus...Om is not 'om' in reality.... It is the principle vibration of 'reality' in Hinduism. The tone, inflection and volume of om do not change during a chant... Try this, close mouth and produce an
mmmmmmmmmmmm noise. now open mouth slightly, the sound has 'changed' to aaaaaaaaaaaa.... make a little 'o' with the lips and the sound 'changes' to ooooooooooo. return to the closed mouth position and you've completed your OM!
This is the 'primordial sound in its three distinct phases' Or four, or seven, or 108, all depends on who and what you refer to...

mmmmmmmmmmaaaaaaaaaaaoooooooooouuuuummmmmmmmmm... Very Happy
