The Art of Living - by Epictetus. Have anyone else noticed that many common phrases is in this text? "stand your ground," "don't care for what you look like," "change yourself," "act with dignity," and even "mind your own business" (but I don't think that he meant what this phrase mean today).
It's an interesting treatise.
common sense is always common sense, toch?
"Common sense is not so common" - Voltaire
common sense may be common sense, but people seem to forget about it or missed it somehow. It's a good reminder, and insightful.
People seem to forget about common sense sometimes.
Anyways, there's also a lot more to it in this treatise, seeing what is within your power and what is not, "do not fear death, fear the fear of death" (this might be interesting to debate) and here's also an interesting one:
"Avoid Casual Sex
Abstain from casual sex and particularly avoid sexual intercourse before you get married. This may sound prudish or old-fashioned, but it is a time-tested way by which we demonstrate respect for ourselves and others. Sex is not a game. It gives rise to very real enduring emotional and practical consequences, to ignore this is to debase yourself, and to disregard the significance of human relationships.
If, however, you know someone who has had casual sex, dont' self-righteously try to win them over to your own views.
An active sex life within a framework of personal commitment augments the integrity of the people involved and is part of a flourishing life."
maybe the things he said became common sense cuz that's ... what happens cuz you say things enough times?
so is he right or wrong?
I think he's at least sort of right. What do you think?
he's got something going with casual sex. <nods>
Whose having casual sex??!!
Example of how we dont use our common sense-We have packets of peanuts that have on the warning 'warning -contains nuts'!!
