Does anyone else have Columbus Day off from work, or am I the only one?

Guess I am the only one. Which is kinda nice. I can go anywhere and it will be open.

Columbus Day is a federal holiday--no mail delivery.

It's the Thanksgiving long weekend here.

If I'd known in advance how pretty it is around Frankenmuth, I would have stayed in Michigan for the weekend. Maybe hit some sales Cool

I've got the day off, but might go into work to kick off a test on the computer (these things take about 6 hours but someone has to be there to type into the command prompt).

Most people not in retail sales or in essential occcupations, e.g. medical, police etc. have Monday off. In the US it's a Federal holiday; in Canada it's Thanksgiving. Major highways will be nightmarish Monday afternoon. I plan to do nothing and go nowhere.

Columbus Day has always been one of my favorite holidays.

I grew up at the Shore in N.J. and every Columbus Day the lifeguards would take their boat out, all dressed up like Italian explorers.

Then, they would row onto the beach, and whoever got to be Columbus would get out and plant the American flag. Laughing

YAY!!!!

Christopher Columbus has discovered Belmar NJ!!!!!

Now we can have a boardwalk and play pinball and miniature gold and eat sausage and pepper subs!

YAY YAY YAY!!!!!

Excellent. Hope he treated the native folk better than in Haiti and elsewhere.

Fortunately, the celebration of Columbus Day has taken on a life of its own and has virtually nothing to do with eulogizing Cristobal Colon any more. Any more than Christmas has anything to do with Jesus of Nazareth.

Pennsylvanians planning to drink spirits on Columbus Day won't have to plan ahead for the first time in at least 71 years.
The state's 637 Wine and Spirits Stores will be open on Monday.
This change is the result of a law that Gov. Ed Rendell signed in 2004. It also allowed liquor stores to be open on Election Day and Veterans' Day and increased the number of liquor stores with Sunday hours.
