Malawi is one of the world's poorest countries with about half of it's population going hungry. Drought has been persistent for a long time, but this year is the severest in over a decade.

Organizations like the World Food Programme (WFP) have been speaking to the coming crisis for almost a year. The UN has pledged 88 million dollars which hadn't been received by Malawi as of Sept 9. Somewhere around 2.9 million people need to be fed until next year's crops come in (and hopefully they will).

Now estimates place the number who will need help to be at 5 million. The president of Malawi says that all regions are affected and there are reports that he downplayed/didn't report some deaths due to lack of food.

Help agencies are asking that food donations happen before hordes of starving children are shown in the media.

And further reporting from the BBC now lists several countries in southern Africa which are in dire straights: Zambia, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Mozambique, Lesotho and Swaziland. BBC

Meager rains, now, give hope for some sort of crop in April. But, people are still dying of hunger (and TB and HIV/AIDS, etc) in Malawi.
