Robert Herrick
The Vine

I dreamed this mortal part of mine
Was metamorphosed to a vine,
Which crawling one and every way
Enthralled my dainty Lucia.
Methought her long small legs and thighs
I with my tendrils did surprise;
Her belly, buttocks, and her waist
By my soft nervelets were embraced.
About her head I writhing hung,
And with rich clusters (hid among
The leaves) her temples I behung,
So that my Lucia seemed to me
Young Bacchus ravished by his tree.
My curls about her neck did crawl,
And arms and hands they did enthrall,
So that she could not freely stir
(All parts there made one prisoner).
But when I crept with leaves to hide
Those parts which maids keep unespied,
Such fleeting pleasures there I took
That with the fancy I awoke;
And found (ah me!) this flesh of mine
More like a stock than like a vine.

Robert Herrick
Upon the Nipples of Julia's Breast

Have you beheld (with much delight)
A red rose peeping through a white?
Or else a cherry (double graced)
Within a lily? Centre placed?
Or ever marked the pretty beam,
A strawberry shows, half drowned in cream?
Or seen rich rubies blushing through
A pure smooth pearl, and orient too?
So like to this, nay all the rest,
Is each neat niplet of her breast.

I greet them all
Le salut pe toate

Love born of deceit
Iubiri n?scute din în?el?ciune,

Love born of coercion,
Iubiri n?scute din obliga?ie,

Love born of cupidity,
Iubiri n?scute din l?comie,

Love born of impediment.
Iubiri n?scute din obstacole.

Though the wide world`s filled
De?i lumea e plin?

With beautiful women,
De femei frumoase,

Her left side compares
Coapsa ei dreapt? nu se compar?

Only to her left.
Decît cu coapsa ei stîng?.

Unless something makes her
Doar dac? ceva ar face-o

Close her eyes
S? închid? ochii

Who`ll notice the waterlilies
Cine s? mai observe nuferii

Swinging from her ears?
De la urechi?

To his tune
În ritmul lui

I dance
Dansez

Rigid tree
Copac b??os

Climbing vine
Ieder? c???r?toare.

He groped me
A pip?it

For the underwear
dup? chilo?ii

That wasn`t
Pe care

There;
nu-i aveam.

I saw the boy`s
V?zînd stînjeneala

Fluster
B?iatului

And embrace him
L-am îmbr??i?at

more tightly.
Mai strîns.

Like two noble warriors
Ca doi nobili r?zboinici

Laid low in close combat
Încle?ta?i pe jos la trînt?,

Your breasts even fallen,
Sînii t?i chiar ?i a?a, c?zu?i,

Look handsome.
Sunt frumo?i.

The village
Satul

Destroyed
Distrus

The heart
Inima

Ecstatic
În extaz

Houses
Casele

Burning
Arzînd

I passed him
Îi întind

The pitcher
Ulciorul.

Her cursed breasts
Blestema?ii ei de sîni

Solid and cleveageless as bosses
Solizi ?i netezi ca umfl?turile

On a  calf-elephant`s forehead
De pe fruntea unei femele de elefant

Restrict her movement
O jeneaz? în mi?c?ri

Make even breathing difficult.
Pîn? s? ?i respire îi e greu.

When he`s away
Cînd e departe

His many infidelities
Îmi amintesc

Come to mind
Toate infidelit??ile lui

When I see him, none.
Cînd îl v?d, nu mai ?in minte niciuna.

 Let faithful wives
Zic? nevestele cumin?i

Say what they like,
Ce-or zice

I don`t sleep with my husband
Eu nu m? culc cu b?rbatu-miu

Even when I do.
Nici cînd m? culc cu el.

At night, cheeks blushed
Noaptea, cu obrajii arzînd

With joy, making me do
De pl?cere, m? pune s?-i fac

A hundred different things,
O mie ?i una de chestii,

And in the morning too shy
Diminea?a e a?a de timid?

To even look up. I don`t believe
C? nici nu ridic? ochii.

 It`s the same woman.
Nu-mi vine s? cred

C? e aceea?i femeie.

The remorseful husband
B?rbatul plin de remu?c?ri

Fallen at her feet.
C?zut la picioarele ei.

Their little boy
Copilul care i se ca??r?

Climbs onto his back.
În spinare.

And the sullen wife
?i nevasta moroc?noas?

Laughing.
Izbucnind în rîs.

After a quarrel,
Dup? o ceart?

The breath suppressed,
?inîndu-?i respira?ia,

Their ears attentive,
Cu urechile ciulite,

The lovers feign sleep:
Îndr?gosti?ii se prefac c? dorm:

Let`s see who
S? vedem cine

holds out longer.
Rezist? mai mult.

Mother, were he abroad
Mam?, dac?-ar fi plecat în str?in?tate

I`d bear the separation
A? suporta desp?r?irea

Waiting for him,
A?teptîndu-l s? vin?,

But to live in separate houses,
Dar a?a, s? tr?im în case separate,

In the same village,
În acela?i sat,

Is worse than death.
E mai r?u decît moartea.

Afraid of midday heat
Speriat? de c?ldura amiezei

Even your shadow,
Chiar ?i umbra

 Stays under your feet,
Mi-a r?mas sub picioare,

Come into the shade, traveller.
Hai la umbr?, c?l?torule.

Distance destroys love
Distan?a distruge iubirea

So does the lack of it.
Tot la fel ca ?i lipsa ei.

Gossip destroys love
Bîrfele distrug iubirea

And sometimes
?i uneori

It takes nothing
Nu e nevoie de nimic

To destroy love.
Ca iubirea s? se distrug?.

Aunt, can a glimpse
M?tu??, poate o privire

Fulfill
S? te umple,

Dreaming of water
Po?i visînd la ap?

Slake your thirst?
S?-?i astîmperi setea?

Aunt,
M?tu??,

Will he ever
Va ?ti el vreodat?

Know my grief
Suferin?a mea?

Can image
Poate imaginea

Pierce mirror?
S? sparg? oglinda?

As husbands get older,
Pe m?sur? ce b?rba?ii îmb?trînesc,

Poorer, uglier,
?i devin din ce în ce mai s?raci ?i mai urî?i,

Good wives love them
Nevestele bune îi iubesc

all the more.
?i mai mult ca înainte.

Fore-legs positioned on the bank,
Cu labele din fa?? pe mal

Hinders agitating in the ripples,
?i cele din spate agitîndu-se în valuri,

A she-frog strokes her own reflection.
O broasc? se b?l?ce?te în propria-i reflec?ie.

Ah Love, Love, ….Love, Love, Love, Love, Love.

What is it with Love
That makes me
then breaks me?

When in love
Do I truly love?

Is it really love
Or do I think that I love?

Maybe I just love being in love
Or love the idea of being in love?

I spent my whole life chasing love.
In the end the one thing I truly love
Could just be the meir pursuit of love.

Lady Mary Wortley Montagu (1689-1762)

Between Your Sheets

Between your sheets you soundly sleep
Nor dreams of vigils that we lovers keep
While all the night, I waking sign your name,
The tender sound does every nerve inflame,
Imagination shows me all your charms,
The plenteous silken hair, and waxen arms,
The well turned neck, and snowy rising breast
And all the beauties that supinely rest
between your sheets.

Ah Lindamira, could you see my heart,
How fond, how true, how free from fraudful art,
The warmest glances poorly do explain
The eager wish, the melting throbbing pain
Which through my very blood and soul I feel,
Which you cannot believe nor I reveal,
Which every metaphor must render less
And yet (methinks) which I could well express

between your sheets.

E.E. Cummings (1894-1962)

i like my body when it is with your
body. It is so quite new a thing.
Muscles better and nerves more.
i like your body. i like what it does,
i like its hows. i like to feel the spine
of your body and its bones, and the trembling
-firm-smooth ness and which i will
again and again and again
kiss, i like kissing this and that of you,
i like, slowly stroking the, shocking fuzz
of your electric fur, and what-is-it comes
over parting flesh. . . . And eyes big love-crumbs,

and possibly i like the thrill

of under me you so quite new

Ovid (43bc - ad 18)
(translated by Christopher Marlowe)

In Summer's Heat

In summer's heat and mid-time of the day,
To rest my limbs upon a bed I lay,
One window shut, the other open stood,
Which gave such light as twinkles in a wood
Like twilight glimpse at setting of the sun,
Or night being past and yet not day begun.
Such light to shamefaced maidens must be shown,
Where they may sport, and seem to be unknown.
Then came Corinna in a long, loose gown,
Her white neck hid with tresses hanging down,
Resembling fair Semiramis going to bed,
Or Lais of a thousand wooers sped.
I snatched her gown, being thin the harm was small,
Yet strived she to be covered therewithal,
And, striving thus as one that would be chaste,
Betrayed herself, and yielded at the last.
Stark naked as she stood before mine eye,
Not one wen in her body could I spy.
What arms and shoulders did I touch and see?
How apt her breasts were to be pressed by me?
How smooth a belly under her waist saw I?
How large a leg, and what a lusty thigh?
To leave the rest, all liked me passing well;
I clinged her naked body, down she fell.
Judge you the rest. Being tired, she bade me kiss.
Jove send me more such afternoons as this.

Anon.

Be Quiet, Sir!

Be quiet, Sir! Begone, I say!
Lord bless us! How you romp and tear!
There!
I swear!
Now you left my bosom bare!
I do not like such boisterous play,
So take that saucy hand away -
Why now, you're ruder than before!
Nay, I'll be hanged if I comply -
Fie!
I'll cry!
Oh - I can't bear it - I shall die!
I vow I'll never see you more!
But - are you sure you've shut the door?

"LOVE'S PHILOSOPHY"

The Fountains mingle with the river
And the rivers with the ocean,
The winds of heaven mix for ever
With a sweet emotion;
Nothing in the world is single,
All things by a law devine
In one another's being mingle -
Why not I with thine?

See the mountains kiss high heaven
And the waves clasp one another;
No sister-flower would be forgiven
If it disdain'd its brother:
And the sunlight clasps the earth,
And the moonbeams kiss the sea -
What are all these kissings worth,
If thou kiss not me?

By Percy Bysshe Shelley.

"HOW DO I LOVE THEE?"

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.
I love thee to the depth and breadth and height
My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight
For the ends of being and ideal grace.
I love thee to the level of every day's
Most quiet need, by sun and candle-light.
I love thee freely, as men strive for right.
I love thee purely, as they turn from praise.
I love thee with the passion put to use
In my old griefs, and with my childhood's faith.
I love thee with a love I seemed to lose
With my lost saints. I love thee with the breath,
Smiles, tears, of all my life; and, if God choose,
I shall but love thee better after death.

By Elizabeth Barrett Browning.

From Sonnets from the Portuguese, Sonnet 21

Say over again, and yet once over again,
That thou dost love me. Though the word repeated
Should seem "a Cuckoo song," as thou dost treat it,
Remember, never to the hill or plain,
Valley and wood, without her cuckoo strain
Beloved, I, amid the darkness greeted
By a doubtful spirit voice, in that doubt's painCry, "Speak once more-thou lovest!" Who can fear
Too many stars, though each in heaven shall roll,
Too many flowers, though each shall crown the year?
Say thou dost love me, love me , love me- toll
The silver iterance! -only minding, Dear,
To love me also in silence with thy soul

How do I love thee Part II

If thou must love me, let it be for naught
Except for love's sake only. Do not say"I love her for her smile--her look--her way
Of speaking gently,--for a trick of thought
That falls in well with mine, and certes brought
A sense of pleasant ease on such a day"--

For these things in themselves, Beloved, may
Be changed, or change for thee--and love, so wrought,
May be unwrought so. Neither love me for
Thine own dear pity's wiping my cheeks dry:A creature might forget to weep, who bore
Thy comfort long, and love thy love thereby!

But love me for love's sake, that evermoreThough mayst love on, through love's eternity.

She Walks in Beauty
Lord Byron

She walks in beauty, like the night
Of cloudless climes and starry skies:
And all that's best of dark and bright
Meet in her aspect and her eyes:
Thus mellow'd to that tender light
Which heaven to gaudy day denies.
One shade the more, one ray the less
Had half impair'd the nameless grace
Which waves in every raven tress,
Or softly lightens o'er her face:
Where thoughts serenely sweet express
How pure, how dear their dwelling place.
And on that cheek, and o'er that brow,
So soft, so calm, yet eloquent,
The smiles that win, the tints that glow,
But tell of days in goodness spent,
A mind at peace with all below,
A heart whose love is innocent!

A Birthday
Christina Rossetti

My heart is like a singing bird
Whose nest is in a watered shoot;
My heart is like an apple tree
Whose boughs are bent with thickset fruit;
My heart is like a rainbow shell
That paddles in a halcyon sea;
My heart is gladder than all these
Because my love is come to me.
Raise me a dais of silk and down;
Hang it with vair and purple dyes;
Carve it in doves and pomegranates,
And peacocks with a hundred eyes;
Work it in gold and silver grapes,
In leaves and silver fleur-de-lys;
Because the birthday of my life
Is come, my love is come to me.

To a Stranger
by Walt  Whitman

Passing stranger! you do not know
How longingly I look upon you,
You must be he I was seeking,
Or she I was seeking
(It comes to me as a dream)

I have somewhere surely
Lived a life of joy with you,
All is recall'd as we flit by each other,
Fluid, affectionate, chaste, matured,

You grew up with me,
Were a boy with me or a girl with me,
I ate with you and slept with you, your body has become
not yours only nor left my body mine only,

You give me the pleasure of your eyes,
face, flesh as we pass,
You take of my beard, breast, hands,
in return,

I am not to speak to you, I am to think of you
when I sit alone or wake at night, alone
I am to wait, I do not doubt I am to meet you again
I am to see to it that I do not lose you.

You Left Me
by Emily  Dickinson

You left me, sweet, two legacies, -
A legacy of love
A Heavenly Father would content,
Had He the offer of;

You left me boundaries of pain
Capacious as the sea,
Between eternity and time,
Your consciousness and me.

My River
by Emily  Dickinson

My river runs to thee.
Blue sea, wilt thou welcome me?
My river awaits reply.
Oh! sea, look graciously.

I?ll fetch thee brooks
from spotted nooks.
Say, sea,
Take me!

Beautiful Dreamer
Stephen Foster

Beautiful dreamer, wake unto me,
Starlight and dewdrops are waiting for thee;
Sounds of the rude world heard in the day,
Lull'd by the moonlight have all pass'd a way!

Beautiful dreamer, queen of my song,
List while I woo thee with soft melody;
Gone are the cares of life's busy throng, --
Beautiful dreamer, awake unto me!

Beautiful dreamer, out on the sea
Mermaids are chaunting the wild lorelie;
Over the streamlet vapors are borne,
Waiting to fade at the bright coming morn.

Beautiful dreamer, beam on my heart,
E'en as the morn on the streamlet and sea;
Then will all clouds of sorrow depart, --
Beautiful dreamer, awake unto me!
