Quote:Monster cane toad spells trouble
By PAUL DYER
April 04, 2003
A giant cane toad has been found in the small Territory goldmining town of Pine Creek.
The discovery of the 20cm-long toad, weighing 1kg, is a reminder cane toads are marching ever closer to Darwin.
Rod Haynes, 42, owner of Pine Creek's Lazy Lizard tavern, said it was one of the biggest toads he'd seen.
``I come from North Queensland _ I was born and reared with them,'' he said. ``But it is the biggest toad I've seen in the Territory.''
The average adult cane toad is 10-15cm long, with females growing larger than males.
The largest female measured in Queensland was 24cm long and weighed 1.3kg. Cane toads were introduced to Queensland in 1935. They are poisonous and a threat to the Territory's native animals.
Mr Haynes said the town, about 200km south of Darwin, had been inundated with cane toads.
``We didn't think there were any here until six months ago, but looking at the age and size of this one _ he's been here a couple of years.''

Yeppie. They have hit Kakadu, too.
How come we can wipe out any species except the ones we want to?
a little over 7 inches and 2 lbs. interesting but not frightening, now the 5ft. plus aussie bunny, that's frightening
Yrs - but there is only one of me - and millions of them. They wipe out native wild-life - kill the little predators by poisoning them - and crowd out the native amphibians.
They say you can smoke 'em, though.
