I am working on relocating from Tokyo to Sydney and have a few questions. Office will most probably be in St. Leonards.
-Where is a nice area to live for a married couple (early 30's). Looking at AU$250-400 per week.
-How does Sydney accomodate Japanese people and are their schools to learn english (government provided or private). How much does tuition cost?
-Is there a local Japanese community or group we could contact?
-If my employer does not provide health insurance, it will mean I will have to purchase private? There is no National health? (Here in Japan we are automatically enrolled in National health).
-Is their a pension system?
- My wife wants to live in Paddington. Is that a nice area and how long will it take to get to St Leonards?
We are moving from Tokyo and are slightly concerned about city life in Sydney. Both of us like the bustle, lights, eating out, cafe's, shops etc..
Much Thanks.
Hiya! I think that if you guys are going to be working in St Leonards, you'd be better of staying on "this" side of the bridge (ie; north of the city) Paddington is nice, but it is in the Eastern Suburbs... If you lived in St Leonards or Crows Nest, there are some really nice cafes and restaurants, and it is only a short trip to the city.
There are some Japanese speaking churches, not sure about social groups. Most of the Japanese people I know have families, and so are living in the suburbs...Areas like Pymble and Turramurra seem to be popular with the families I know.
Sydney is quite cosmopolitan, so I wouldn't worry too much! Hopefully, someone will be along soon with some better answers than mine! Good Luck!
bruce2005, Welcome to a2k. I'm a Japanese American, and visited Sydney some years ago. Here's a link I hope you find helpful in your quest to find what you need.
