FAME AT LAST!...........

So.......there I was about half an hour ago, standing in a big queue to buy one of those universal remote control thingies for my TV, when this American lady turned to me and struck up a conversation.
I had approached the queue from opposite side to her at about the same time, and had let her go in front as she was basically female, which compells me to do that sort of thing.
She thanked me and I immediately registered that she was American, so I asked if she was on holiday over here.
She replied that she was married to an Englishman and they had lived in the States most of their married life, until he died about two years ago. She then decided, as her two sons were living and working in London, to come and retire here, close to her husband's sister with whom she gets on famously.
I asked if she misses anything from "home" and she said that she catches up on most of the gossip from the USA, by reading "American" news type forums, and watching sattelite channels on TV.
Her sister in law is an avid internet user, and has been showing her how to find all of these "American" forums, and they both sit at the computer during most days, reading up on what is happening in the world.

As one who can't keep his mouth shut, I recommended A2K and said that I was a member who is nearly always gossiping on various threads...blah de blah.....thinking that she would never have heard of us.
She looked at me and asked whether I was Steve, Spendius or Lord Ellpus!

I nearly fell over, and then realised that she may not like my brand of humour, so I said something like "that would be telling"...........

She then listed about a dozen or so names that are regular posters here, and I had a little chat about several of them, including myself, which was a VERY wierd experience !
I asked if she had joined and had entered any posts, but she said that she only reads this and other forums at the moment, but has been gradually learning how to use her computer so that she can have the confidence to join these places.

I won't list all of the names she mentioned, for fear of embarrassing them, but she only had praise for all of us, and reckoned that A2K was a nice place, all in all.

So....if you read this, Mrs American lady who was queuing to buy a digital radio and chatting to that incredibly handsome English guy......now you know who I am!

A very odd feeling though, all the same..........

She had actually decided on a Ferguson, which is not exactly the best type to get.

Why? Are you thinking of getting one? Bang and Olufsen, any day!

A bit frightening, really.........I was a bit wary of letting her know my user name, as it could have provoked a variety of reactions.

I didn't want to run the risk of a mid 60's year old woman, suddenly hitting me with her handbag and calling me a wierdo pervert or something!

In the end, I was quite chuffed at what she had to say.....she liked my holiday diary and said her sister and her had a lot of laughs with it.
She also loved a certain farmer, and reckoned he was some sort of pro writer in real life, or should be. He reminded her of her cousin!

She normally lurks in the cooking and travel threads, apparently.

DAMN! OK, thats well weird. Thats pretty amazing.

I dont know whether Id be wildly flabbergasted or just kinda weirded out. Probably more like weirded out! Razz

Guess we'd better not assume that we can just post anything here in total privacy, eh ... <giggles>

Should I better close that sub/dom thread now? Mr. Green

Wierded out just about sums it up, Nimh. I was by no means THE one she was going on about, but I figured in there a little bit, as she was trying to find out who I was. So naturally she was mentioning the English people.

She knew quite a bit about us.......for instance, she knew that there was no chance of me being Mc Tag, as he lived in the North and she said he was Scottish (is he?) and I sounded English. She knew, or thought, that either Steve, Spendius or myself were from the civilised end of England, so pumped me for info as to which one I was.
She also knew that I wasn't the Prince, as he is known to be dark and handsome (she actually said that.....bloody cheek).....and carried on quizzing me. I had a sneaky suspicion she guessed who I was, as I must have gone bright red when she started talking about the holiday thread.
It was a shame that the queue had reached the checkout by the time she got onto the American bunch, but we DID manage to chat about one or two.

From memory, Montana, Set, Charlie(sorry, never heard of him/her...travel?), edgar and the usual humour crew got a quick mention, as if she was proving that she actually DID check into A2K and was not telling fibs.

As she left, I was having my remote control bagged up, and I told her to make herself known, if and when she joins.

Nice lady............

Perhaps it was somebody who is already posting here, and she wanted to keep her own anonymity in tact...

If this happened to me. I would drop everything. My jaw would drop with eyes bugging out backing up slowly. Then i'd turn screaming and running as fast as I could knocking over old ladies and DVD racks. Than when I got to the door I would turn smile, wave and yell "See you on A2K" then start running again.
