I have a friend that lives in Humble Texas... will the storm hit there also??
Yep. Looks to be just a little north of Galveston.
Hmm, Coluber might be in Texas too.
Well, concerns for all who are in the paths, a2ker especially.
Edgar and Shewolf
Edgar and Shewolf, I just PMed my telephone number to both of you in case you need to leave and can get to Albuquerque.
BBB
I just got a pm from mac11.
She's at home in Houston - battening down the hatches at her apartment.
Look at the map of Texas and find The Woodlands, just north of Houston. Tomball is slightly southwest of there.
I truly appreciate the offers of help I have gotten. So far, we are not told to evacuate and the hospital remains open.
Thanks for passing on the mac news, ehBeth.
Oh, yeah, I know where The Woodlands is...
...well, not personally, but I had noticed it on the map.
Also glad to hear from mac..
Mac, do you have some a2k phone numbers just in case?
DD, maybe you are right. i remember carlos and charlie's going under water rather well. still with hurricane force winds being forecast in austin (which i don't think has happened in a long time)-y'all just be careful!
Thanks for the concern, everybody. And thanks Edgar for giving us a place to check in.
I'm pretty much ready here. Food, water, batteries, radio, flashlight, candles, a good book. Still need to tape up the windows and fill containers with water.
My block will probably flood, so my car will be parked elsewhere. (I lost a car to the flood during Tropical Storm Allison in 2001.) But I live on the third floor, so as long as the roof and the windows hold, I'll be ok. Flood water will drain off, but downed trees won't move so fast.
I do have several phone numbers for a2k folks (and they have mine), but I don't expect to have phone or cell (or power or cable) for a while after Rita.
Yikes.
Not evacuating, eh?
Double yikes.
Will be thinking about you.
Can you get a back up cellphone battery (or two?)
(not to be alarmist..)
fill your tub with some water as well mac.
so you can flush your toilet, use a wash rag to clean up if necessary.. and if it gets HORRIBLE, you have tub water to drink as well.

not to be alarmist, either, but i'm guessing that if power goes out, then cell phone towers lose power so cell phones won't work anyway. so here's hoping power stays on or gets restored quickly.
EDIT: correction: quick googling shows that some towers have backup generators but many don't; so here's hoping enough have backups, and the backups last until power gets restored.
I'm not sure if this was posted already - but better twice than not
Hurricane Rita Interactive Map
I could just scream. My aunt and her two daughters, who live in Missouri City, a suburb of Houston, were on their way to Baton Rouge and then, because of the traffic and also, they've heard that Rita is veering east, they've TURNED AND ARE HEADING BACK HOME!
