Squid!
(Thanks Piffka)

I live in Huntsville, Alabama. There are some really good fossil beds here. Incidentally, I collect fossilized squid, nautiluses (sp?!?), ammonites, etc. You can find a lot of them if you know where to look. Also, I enjoy dried cuttlefish and kalimari. Squid abound!

Oh, good. It worked! Welcome to a2k, Lazarus!

I do have a lucky trilobite somewhere, hmmm, where is that fella? I wish I could find fossils around here. I'm not so fond of squid, but I think the nautiluses (or however they are called) are a fantastic lifeform. Was just reading about them somewhere... they live in a fairly deep part of the ocean and there way of moving is so odd.

Speaking of oddities, do you know about the Burgess Shale fossils?

Fossils
Thank you Piffka. This looks like a pretty useful forum. I am also interested in nautiluses. I'd like to get ahold of some video of color-changing cuttlefish and octopi. If anyone has a link, post it. I am going on a paleontology dig next summer in North Dakota. Gonna dig up T. Rex and Hadrosaur. Yes, I've looked into the Burgess Shale collection, and it is really wild. I read a book about it a few months ago. Fascinating stuff.

Why ar eall these squid being washed up?

Lazarus - I know what you mean about the wonderful changing colours - they are magical, no?

Dammit - I have seen them on TV - but I cannot recall the name of the docos - I wonder if Attenborough's sea ones have stuff on them? I think that may be where I saw them.

I am confused... which one is the biggest? The Giant or the Colossal? Reuters said the Giant was "world's largest invertebrate" but I could have sworn the other was twice as big. I read my first post and think I was mixed up, or else confused because the Colossal was just half-grown. Can anybody clear this up?

I once owned a pet squid named Bree,
Who lived in the depths of the sea.
I told him, "I'm sorry,
But I love calamari."
And I fried him at 400 degrees.

I married a beautiful squid-
The greatest thing I ever did.
She'll caress me with suckers,
And after I *uck her,
She'll give birth to my tentacled kids.

There's a squid in my bath tub named Lucky.
He's eaten my sweet rubber ducky.
He'll eat all my food,
He's incredibly rude,
And my bathwater's turned rather yucky.

I once kept a squid in my sink.
He developed the raunchiest stink.
My senses were heightened,
For when he felt frightened,
He typically sprayed me with ink.
