1887-0630, the End of Traditional Hawaii.
The Honolulu Rifles, Cavalry Squadron-militia made up of Christian, white, capitalist, rich, Hawaiian-citizens. Their mission was a new constitution. Sign or resign, the King signed.
Americans could now vote and own property. This was the end of the Hawaiian Kingdom.
1890-1220, Oakland, California, Bans Drugs.
Oakland, California, enacts a law against opium, morphine, and cocaine. The new regulations allowed only doctors to prescribe these drugs, which, until then, had been legal for cures or pain relief. Reflecting a general trend at the time, Oakland was only one of the jurisdictions across the country that began to pass criminal laws against the use of mind-altering substances.
In 1880, Kansas banned the sale and manufacture of all booze in an amendment to its constitution. Many other states left the question open to county governments, which resulted in different alcohol laws in every town. Soon, sellers were required to obtain a license in most states. Interestingly, both Texas and Massachusetts passed laws requiring that bars and saloons have open windows, so that the community could keep an eye on what was happening inside.
In the latter part of the 19th century, Chinese opium dens began to spring up. Generally, there was no legal prohibition on these narcotics, although respectable society certainly disapproved of addicts. Due to the growth of the opium problem after the acquisition of the Philippines, the Harrison Act of 1914 was passed, which added a tax to the sale of narcotics. This was intended to stop the easy availability of drugs, and in 1919, the act was extended to prohibit even the use of drugs in small doses for recovering addicts.
1904-0107, Accident, CQD Becomes SOS.
In 1904, the first distress call 'CQD' was introduced. 'CQ' stood for 'Seek You' and 'D' for 'Danger'.
This lasted until 1906 when it was replaced with 'SOS,' SOS did not stand for anything. Not, “Save our Souls or Save our Ship or even Stuck on Stupid.”
SOS was just easy to type in mores-code ……---……---……--- etc.
Until help came.
1908-0917, Aviation, the First Airplane Fatality.
LT Thomas E. Selfridge became the world’s first airplane fatality when the airship he was co-piloting along with Orville Wright crashed near Fort Meyer, VA. An untested propeller ripped apart the plane’s structure, causing it to nosedive from an altitude of 75 feet.
1910-0516, Gender, Aviation, the First Female Pilot (Contested.)
1910-0516, Miss Blanche Stuart Scott gets historical credit. It is not true, the plane she was supposed to fly crashed before she flew. Newspapers had already written headlines about her being the first. To save face journalists and Blanch agreed to “pretend” she flew on 16 May 1910.
Curtiss Airplane Company read about Blanche being the first female to pilot and plane and offered her free flying lessons.
1910-0906, Blanch claims she made two solo flights on this date. No credible conformation exists.
1910-0916, a Miss Bessica Raiche is also credited with being the first female pilot. The Aero Club of America confirmed she flew solo on 16 September 1910.
1910-1023, Blanch few in front of 10,000 spectators.
1948-0615, Blanch was invited to fly in a jet by BG Chuck Yeager in a TF-80C jet. She is the first woman to fly in a jet.
