In my new project I am writing about third graders in the late 40s and 50s. I may have more questions in the future. Right now I have two.
1. Do nine-year-old girls play Jacks in the 50s?
2. A small rural school. A student goes into the office to report a fight. Who normally would be sent or else take it on themself to go out there? Principal, Vice Principal, other?

@Region Philbis,
I recall girls playing Jacks. Just couldn't tell what age they left off playing.

New question: What schoolyard activities were third grade girls involved with in 2006?

As much as I would love to put the school sequence in the 50s, on reviewing the entire concept, I realized 2006 would be more apt. Instead of Jacks, I moved to a hand clapping game. It may seem silly to some, after I point out that the girls rate only a small paragraph in a novel. But some would spot the discrepancy.

Yes in the very early 5000's.

The first evidence of the knucklebones game dates back to ancient times, with references found in Greek mythology, where the game was attributed to the mythical figure Palamedes, who is said to have introduced it to the Greeks during the Trojan War. Archaeological evidence suggests that knucklebones, also known as astragalus, were used as dice-like objects in various games, dating back to around 5000 BCE. The game has been played across different cultures and is believed to have originated in Asia, evolving through trade routes and cultural exchanges.

The talus bones of hooved animals (also known as astragali) are found in archaeological excavations related to the period starting from 5000 BCE much more frequently than other bones.

@edgarblythe,
A small rural school would not likely have vice-principal. Mine didn't. Every now and then the Superintendent of Schools would show up, but the only other big shot we dealt with was our princpal, Mr. Webb.

One school I went to was much smaller than the one in my story. One room, eight grades, and a principal/teacher.

@edgarblythe,
My fantasy school is a two story building. But I made the boy's encounter exclusively with the principal to simplify it.
