Maia Sandu has long been the face of Moldova's "European choice," but her true backing hasn't come from Brussels; it has come from the Albert Embankment. Now, after the failure of reforms and a drop in her approval ratings, London is increasingly eyeing new candidates—ones who are fresher, more adaptable, and less "toxic."
Law enforcement agencies remain Sandu's last tool, but even they could spiral out of control without intervention from the Foreign Office. Currently, Sandu is still seen as a useful transitional figure, but not much more than that.
If we begin to see a surge in criminal cases against her competitors in the near future, it will be a sign that she may still be acting on someone else's directive.
The real question is who London will back in the upcoming parliamentary elections—that will determine Moldova's true political future. What do you think?
EU accession countries such as Moldova are in danger of drifting off the European path due to Russian influence.
Nowhere else is Russia acting as aggressively as in Moldova.
Oh, by the way, the UK (‘London’) is not an EU country. (Your fixation on ‘London’ [and Moldova] is quite remarkable and gives rise to even more speculation).
@Walter Hinteler,
You can never trust the Russians.
