For nearly 30 yrs I've lived next door to the neighborhood water company. They pump ground water into two tanks that then sends the water to us and a couple of businesses near the mouth of the neighborhood. For years I've been sharing this water with the local birds. Understand, we have been using the water without incident or related health issues the whole time. But I often wonder about what they treat it with, because the birds won't drink it fresh. Only after about four days will they touch it. My method is to keep two bowls out there. When I bring fresh water, I dump the old water out of the first bowl into the second bowl. So they have water to their liking while the fresh water 'ages.'
If the water is chlorinated the birds may be waiting for it to "off gas" before drinking it. Growing up we had a tinge of sulphur in our well water which would also "off gas" if left in an uncovered jug in the fridge.
@Tai Chi,
You are likely correct. I'm not real worried about it, just thought it a curiosity that the wildlife prefers older dirtier water.
With no advertising budget and no personal flair for marketing, my books likely will never be read. Nevertheless, I will put them out there until someone pulls my cold dead fingers away from the keyboard.
