1a is ticking off I think as in carpeting is a telling off and mattress covers reveal ticks. Thats my way of thinking anyway.I'll keep thinking for the others.

Hi butterfly and welcome to A2K

68a So close in a way - THUS

So = thus
Close in a way (anagram of SHUT)

Does that give you any more clues for 55D? If yes, please post again with any other letters added.

Hi butterfly

The answer to 55d just came to me - BANISTER

(flight as in staircase)

Do you subscribe to the Lovatts Colossus crossword books? Issue 100 is not yet in newsagents here in Perth. It should be available by next Wednesday or Thursday.

Hi crisscross, thankyou so much for your help with 'banister'. I hadn't even considered a 'flight of steps'! My thinking was geared towards plane flights, etc. No wonder I was having so much trouble trying to answer the clue! Laughing I am a Lovatts crossword fan, have been buying their books for a number of years now, and have become a subscriber to Big, Colossus, Holiday Collection, Cluewords, Findawords, Starhunts and Mega over the past several months. I have found that the books usually arrive in the post a few days/ to a week before they go on sale in the stores. I do my best to try and complete the competition entries and get them in by their due dates, (fingers crossed!).
Thankyou again for your help, it was greatly appreciated! Very Happy

Hi Dutchy, its nice to meet you Smile

26A. Young tortoise's rival portrayed in clever etching (7)
I have 'leveret' as my answer.
A leveret is a young hare.
'leveret' is spelt out in the clue within the letters of 'clever etching'.
39A. He plans to earn plenty (9)
I have "architect' as my answer. I hope this is correct!
If anyone comes up with a different answer for this one can they
please let me know? All I found to go by was: 'he plans'. I couldn't
decipher anything more from this clue.
46A. His power is charming (8)
I have 'sorcerer' as my answer.
48A. Way of moving trap (8)
I have 'carriage' as my answer.
A 'trap' is a type of 'carriage'.

I hope this helps Dutchy. Good luck!

Hi Butterfly
Thought I would be able to finish the Cryptic with your answers, how wrong I was! Tried all day but am still stuck on 29d, have ?a?????e?, and 41a, have a???t. Thought this could be ALOHA, but that does not fit in with 38 down MATCH. Many thanks.

Hi Julksy, nice to meet you. I had androtomy (dissection of the human body) for 40 across, but I now feel radiology is the better word, because it will give you "brace" (two items of the same kind for 38down

If "aloha" is correct for 41a, I have ?a??o??e? for 29d. which represents "After combat a thousand have gone right off sabre-rattler" which has me stumped!
Any takers?

Regards Dutchy
