Tesla Stops China Orders for Model S, X Amid U.S.-China Tariff Clash
"April 11 - Tesla (NAS'DAQ:TSLA) has stopped accepting new orders for its imported Model S and Model X vehicles in China. The order pages for both U.S.-built models were removed from the automaker's Chinese website and WeChat mini program, with no formal explanation provided.
The move comes as U.S.-China trade friction intensifies. On Friday, Beijing raised tariffs on American imports to 125%, following a decision by President Donald Trump to hike duties on Chinese goods to 145%. The higher levies are likely to make imported EVs significantly more expensive compared to domestic alternatives.
Tesla manufactures the bulk of its China-sold vehicles including the Model 3 and Model Y at its Shanghai facility. These models accounted for nearly all of the company's 657,000 deliveries in China last year, while just 1,553 Model X and 311 Model S units were imported, according to data from the China Auto Dealers Association.
